Ravenswatch is a New Action Roguelite from the Makers of Curse of the Dead Gods
Ravenswatch, a new top-down action roguelite, just received a gameplay overview trailer that focused on the characters and their abilities.
The fantasy land of Reverie has been besieged by all shapes and sizes of nightmares. Horrific beasts and creatures have all sprung out of the woodwork (and shallow graves) and have been corrupting everything in their path.
It is only the Ravens of Ravenswatch that can give hope in Reverie’s darkest hour. They have summoned heroes of fairytales and legends from different realms, beckoning for any aid. You play as one of these eager heroes, and try your best to turn back the tide of darkness.
Players of Ravenswatch choose a unique hero from ancient fairytales and other mythos. However, they are darker versions of their whimsical selves to better match the Lovecraftian aesthetic of Ravenswatch.
Everything in Reverie is based on old stories and legends but in a darker tone. Even the fairytale of the three little pigs will make its way into the nightmarish lands. We may even see things such as elements of Norse mythology.
As of the moment, there are 6 different characters to choose from. These are Little Red Riding Hood, the Pied Piper, the Snow Queen, Beowulf, Aladdin, and Melusine. Each of them has their own skills and abilities that are thematic to the character.
Scarlet, or little miss Red Riding Hood, is a rogue-type character. She can deal tons of damage with her dual daggers. However, she has a trick up her sleeve: at night she can transform into a powerful werewolf. This will essentially change up her skillset during the twilight hours.
The legendary Pied Piper gleefully commands a horde of vermin into battle. His chittering vermin just love nibbling on the minions of darkness, providing a constant stream of damage. As he is also a charismatic bard, the Piper also has musical-themed abilities and buffs.
Beowulf comes next, the legendary warrior. Aside from swinging around his massive claymore, the warrior also has a small pet dragon by his side. He can order his draconic friend to spew fire onto the battlefield. The minion can even empower Beowulf’s attacks with magic.
Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg. As the game goes along Early Access, new heroes will be constantly added to the available pool. This is just the beginning of the Ravenswatch.
As you battle and level up, you will get to choose one of two random passive buffs that will enhance your existing abilities (think ofHades‘ boon system).
Speaking of abilities, each hero will have 6 active ones. These are split between 4 offensive normal skills, one dodge skill, and an ultimate.
In keeping true with the best things about the roguelite genre, Ravenswatch will have procedurally generated levels. However, this is complemented successfully by the game’s grim and dark art style. In fact, it is highly reminiscent ofDarkest Dungeonand evenCurse of the Gods. The colors are dark and foreboding and further accentuated with thick outlines.
Each area will always shift its layout and enemies to keep things fresh. The heroes of Ravenswatch will need to defeat foes to collect Dream Shards which they can trade with the Sandman for various upgrades.
Despite your strength, you will eventually succumb to the darkness. Whenever this happens, death is not the end. Just like other roguelites, a meta-progression system will allow you to keep some resources that can be used to purchase permanent enhancements for all your succeeding runs. And of course, you get to know more about the world of Reverie, the Ravenswatch, as well as the heroes and legends of old.
Another innovation that Ravenswatch brings to the table is that this new game will be playable with friends. Players can play in groups of up to four, creating a nice synergy between different characters. Perhaps you want to play as the quick and magical Aladdin and then augment it with the Snow Queen’s ice magic to slow enemies. Or maybe the Pied Piper’s rats can nibble on foes while Melisune drenches them with watery fury.
The wide variety of heroes and upgrades, randomly generated areas, and items, plus the promise of co-op play is sure to bring endless replayability to Ravenswatch.
