Redemption Reapers is a new tactical turn-based RPG from the makers of Ender Lilies.
Developer Adglobe just announced their newest game, Redemption Reapers. If you aren’t familiar with this indie dev, you should be. They are actually the creative minds behind the metroidvaniaEnder Lilies.
Redemption Reapers is quite a large departure from their previous work. This is a fully turn-based and dark fantasy RPG, whileEnder Lilieswas an artistically haunting real-time action platformer.
But considering how well the team was able to build Ender Lilies, we can definitely expect that they have enough fuel in the tank to be able to spark another work of greatness this time around.
Redemption Reapers follows the Ashen Hawk Brigade. This group of mercenaries is both feared and cunning and has been the target of hatred and ire by the general populace. Their members are brigands, murderers, thieves, and other despicable scum of the earth.
The story starts out when horrific creatures called the Mort start consuming the land. These darkspawn are here to wipe out life as we know it, for reasons unknown. The Mort are near limitless and are on the verge of overwhelming the land if left to their own devices unchecked.
It looks like the Faithless Reapers, now being called the Redemption Reapers, are the only hope that the land can depend on. Despite their questionable past, will they be able to redeem themselves by saving mankind? Only time will tell.
The world of Redemption Raiders is quite far off from the one created for Ender Lilies. Instead of side-scrolling, we now have access to a fully 3D world (as well as 3D characters). Landscapes, foes, and even the “heroes” themselves are quite bleak both in temperament and color patterns.
Redemption Raiders is not a happy setting, nor will it have a happy story. Developer Adglobe claims that we will see and experience the atrocities brought upon by war, especially of this supernatural kind.
Fully voiced conversations are also a new element that Adglobe is bringing into this game, promising to create even more emotion and dramatic flair. From the trailer footage itself, the voice lines we do hear are of good quality. It also helps that the soundtrack itself is also quite great.
Redemption Raiders is a turn-based tactical RPG at its heart, so fans ofKing Arthur: Knight’s Tale,Rogue Trader, or evenChaos Gate: Daemonhuntersshould feel right at home here. It will have a grid-based battlefield, but it isn’t quite sure how action points and movement will be handled here.
Tactics and positioning will be key to victory in Redemption Raiders. Units that are close by can actually coordinate their attacks, creating devastating chain hits toward singular foes. There also seems to be some sort of quicktime button prompt in combat, giving us the impression that well-timed button presses can have hits deal additional damage, or create different effects.
Redemption Raiders also has some more “cinematic” attacks that trigger a short cutscene, like inFire EmblemorLost Eidolons. These zoom into the action, highlighting the devastating hits you (or your enemies) will do.
Resources will also be quite limited, forcing the player to make difficult choices and make do with what they have. Recovery items will be scarce so the raiders will need to approach every encounter quite carefully and tactically.
Players will get quite familiar with their band of merry Raiders. There is a total of 5 characters, all of which we will command during every battle encounter. Each of these has its own specialties and weaknesses that they bring to the table.
Our usual archetypes seem to be represented in Redemption Raiders. We have some sort of witchunter, an acrobatic rogue, a true-sighted archer, a burly barbarian, and a stalwart swordsman.
Each of them has their own tragic story to tell, with their lowly origins and life of crime. Players will be able to get to know each and every member of their team and gain a better understanding of the world and its populace.
It is also quite refreshing to see a developer trying out different things. Redemption Reapers has a totally different perspective, art style, and gameplay to its predecessor.
