Redemption Reapers Trailer Showcases the Ashen Hawks Members
Redemption Reapears gets a new trailer that introduces the members of the mercenary group, The Ashen Hawk Brigade.
Bleak and dark fantasy worlds are all the rage right now.King Arthur: Knight’s Taleis just one of the tactical RPGs that is a dark retelling of a fabled classic. Developers Adglobe, known primarily for being the makers of the underratedSoulslikeMetroidvania, Ender Lilies, is also about to put another entry into the mix.
Redemption Reapers focuses mainly on the mercenary group called the Ashen Hawk Brigade. This bunch of misfits and criminals have been largely shunned by most, as they have quite the shady backgrounds. While the new trailers and hands-on previews floating around didn’t expound on this, we do know that some will have dark pasts tied to them and into the narrative.
A mysterious race of monsters called the Mort has begun to rise up in power all throughout the realm. For all intents and purposes, they are mindless creatures that are hell-bent on killing and generally just making a mess of things. Left alone, they would eventually ravage the entire country.
It is the Ashen Hawk Brigade that is the only ones able to step up to these Mort. It isn’t entirely clear what happened to the armies of the realm, but it looks like we’re the best bet for humanity to make it out alive.
The Redemption Reapers group is made up of five individuals with their own backstories. Based on initial reveals, it looks like they will all be present in each of the combat scenarios in the game. It isn’t quite clear yet if there’s a permadeath mechanic like inKing Arthur, or evenFire Emblem.
Our most basic character would be Glenn, the swordsman of the group. His aim with his mighty longsword is true enough that he is able to knock back enemies, essentially controlling the battlefield. It also looks like Glenn is part paladin, as he has healing capabilities available when needed.
Sarah is our roguish type of the bunch, further highlighted by her choice of dual daggers. Being the most agile of the group, Sarah can unleash thousands of cuts into the enemies before they even realize what’s happened.
The burliest, and strongest of the bunch is the massive Urs. This hulking barbarian will be best when regulated with frontline combat. Aside from his massive defensive abilities, Urs will be able to unleash large area attacks to decimate nearby foes.
Next up is Lugh, who looks more like a Witch Hunter than anything else. This man is an expert at providing midrange support to his allies with his spear.
Lastly, we have Karren. She is the archer of the group, and as such is best when left at a distance. She can pick off foes at her leisure (as long as they don’t get too near).
Redemption Reapers is stepping up its game when it comes to voice acting chops. The developer’s previous title,Ender Lilies, was largely devoid of any voice work at all, save for a few sound effects. This time it’s different, as they have secured an arguably star-studded cast for the characters.
Sarah is being voiced by Alejandra Reynoso. She is particularly known for her portrayal of Sypha Belnades in the NetflixCastlevaniaTV show, as well as a ton of other video games. She is joined by Allegra Clark, who plays Karren. Clark is no stranger to video game voiceovers, as she’s lent her talent toFire Emblem: Three Houses‘ Dorothea andGenshin Impact‘sBeidou.
David Lodge is also a FE: Three Houses voice, and he plays the barbarian Urs. He is also a herbalist in the MMONew World. Kyle McCarley, on the other hand, plays Lugh. He’s been in the variousNiergames as well asDungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance. Last on the cast is Glenn’s voice actor, Jason Spisak, who lends his voice to Silco in Netflix’s Arcane.
Redemption Reapers will have fully turn-based combat that will be using a phase system. Action points will be the bread and butter of how you interact with the encounter. These will determine the skills you can use and the movement you can make.
As previously alluded to, careful positioning will be key to taking down your innumerable foes. A system called “Follow-Up Attacks” is in place, such that any nearby ally will perform an attack whenever a friendly unit does its own offensive move. Chaining such follow-up strikes will be key to making the most out of your heroes without expending too many valuable action points.
Since units can move right after attacking, you can reposition your heroes after slaying a foe. Move them into key areas within an ally’s range so that a follow-up can be triggered eventually.
Like almost all turn-based tactical RPGs, the characters in Redemption Reapers will have unique skills and abilities to make them shine even more. For example, Sarah’s Butterfly Sting ability allows her to consistently wail on enemies without the risk of being at the receiving end of a counterattack.
Lastly, Special Attacks are deadly hits that each hero can perform. They will deal massive damage on their own, but what truly makes these hits special is that they will confer game-changing effects after they hit. Buffs on allies or debuffs on enemies are a strong possibility.
