Redfall Gameplay Deep Dive Shows off the World, Characters, and More!
Redfall, the vampire-filled open-world action survival game gets a gameplay overview trailer. We get to explore the town, the activities, the foes, and more!
The upcoming open-world survival horror action shooter Redfall just got a 10-minute gameplay overview. In it, developers Arkane Austin ofDishonoredand Deathloop fame explored various gameplay elements, activities, and combat.
The game takes place in Redfall, Massachusetts. It is a sleepy island town that (usually) does not have anything too extraordinary happening to it. Being an island, it has been somewhat isolated from the world. And that makes it the perfect place for a horrific cataclysmic event to unfold right under our noses. Vampires have risen up, and have started taking over.
Arkane Austin is treating the town of Redfall as a character in itself, as the world one plays in is just as important. As such, there will be tons of world-building in terms of environmental storytelling as well as other minute details. We can get to see how a horrific vampire uprising has affected the population. Some people decide to end things quickly and on their terms. Others fight back. Even more take the easy route and actually join the vampires and form a macabre cult that worships the creatures of the night.
Redfall will have the usual environments that you would expect from a sleepy backwater town. We will have various streets, business centers, haunted forests, derelict boardwalks, and other landmarks to dot the landscape.
Of course, there will always be safe refuges scattered around, providing players with a temporary safe haven.
Redfall is a wide-open playground that players can choose to explore solo, or in a group of four. You will be able to pick between four different heroes who have their own personalities, look, and upgradable abilities.
Layla Ellison is an engineering student who can use telekinetic powers because of an experiment gone wrong (I seem to notice a trend here). Jacob Boyer was a soldier who now has a vampiric eye and a pet raven who can scout the vicinity. Remi de la Rosa is an engineer who has a trusty robot companion named Bribon. Lastly, we have Devinder Crousley, an inventor who has the knack for creating his own weapons.
Speaking of weapons, there will be tons of variety when it comes to vampire-slaying tools. We will have our standard armaments, such as pistols, shotguns, and rifles. But it looks like we will get access to some more esoteric and exotic weapons to cleanse the evil from the land. Strangely enough, Stakes can also be literally attached to the front of our guns, creating our very own vampire-killing bayonet.
Vampires in Redfall aren’t like your typical coffin-dweller, nor do they sparkle like Robert Pattinson. Instead, these creatures are the result of failed experiments that have clearly gotten quite out of hand. They have been gifted psychic abilities from these experiments, elevating them to new heights that have never been seen before.
These creatures have even gone as far as creating their own hierarchy, which ranges from feral fledglings to even vampire gods themselves.
One of the more unique enemies that we will face is called The Shroud. This wisp-like creature of darkness disorients the player and his group by enveloping the immediate area in shadows, limiting our field of view. They hurl shadow bolts, as expected. Defensively, they can even meld into the floor and join the shadows on the ground, only to reappear elsewhere.
Being an open world, Redfall will have tons of things to do. You will have your traditional quests/missions wherein an NPC will give you the odd job or two. These will usually come with stories attached. Random encounters can also pop up while you’re out and about, such as having to rescue some folks that have been trapped by the vampires.
Just like in the Dishonored games, Redfall will allow you to approach missions in different ways. We can go heavy through stealth avenues, or just light up the entire arena. Your choice.
Your overall objective in Redfall is to banish the vampire gods forever, as well as remove their blockade from the sun. This is no easy task, as you will need to slowly take back various neighborhoods and districts from the vampire threat. Players will start picking away at the outlying area while unlocking safe houses in the process.
Scattered through the town of Redfall are areas called Vampire Nests. These are the homes and breeding grounds of the vampires. To completely destroy these vile lairs, players will need to take out the (literal) heart of the nest. Once you start going to town on the heart, however, all nearby vampires will begin to swarm you. Better come prepared!
Eventually, players will get to face off against major vampires called Siphons. Once you start taking over entire districts, you will encounter even stronger foes called Underbosses. These are extremely powerful elite enemies that were blessed by the vampire gods themselves. Felling these foes will reward players with a Skull key (bigger and better than a skeleton key!). Collect enough of these and you will be able to begin unlocking the way forth to eliminate the most powerful vampires.
