Resident Evil 4 Remake Takes a Closer Look at Gameplay and Some Familiar Faces

Resident Evil 4 Remake shows off its gameplay and characters in new trailers.

Everything looks to have received a huge facelift, as even character designs themselves have improved. Today, let’s take a look at the details, as well as what’s in each edition ofResident Evil 4 Remake.

Resident Evil 4 Remakecontinues the trend of improving the core gameplay, similar to how theResident Evil 2andResident Evil 3remakes did it. While those entries had more drastic fundamental changes (in the sense that these two titles had a fixed-camera perspective), Resident Evil 4 needs no such overhaul.

The original RE4 already was an over-the-shoulder third-person shooter just like Dead Space. However, there are still some nice touches that are making it over to the remake. For one, Capcom is still making heavy use of the excellent RE Engine that is responsible for rendering these beautiful visuals.

This engine will be put to the test, as this entry features more open environments compared to the city-constrained RE2/RE3. We can expect sprawling villages and imposing castles, just like in RE Village.

We can also see in one scene that the useful Knife quick item is back from RE2 Remake. This handy little weapon could be used in a pinch whenever our character gets grappled by a zombie. Most of the time, this is enough to kill the creature outright and get our avatar out of harm’s way.

Instead of having super quick snippets of in-engine gameplay, the new trailer featured some longer shots. It starts off slow and full of tension, as Leon begins exploring the abandoned village. In one of the homes is a dead body, and it looks like one of the police officers that you’re with in the beginning.

From here, all hell breaks loose in the Resident Evil 4 Remake footage. Leon starts shooting and running through the village, fending off the crazed villagers.

Eventually, he contacts his handler, Hannigan who finally has a body and is no longer just a face on your phone. Unfortunately, the call is cut short as Leon needs to act quickly and escape. This leads to a new scene in the village courtyard and starts what is arguably one of the most stressful openings in gaming.

This courtyard segment is truly terrifying and is one of the most iconic sequences in the series. Leon has to singlehandedly fend off the entire village full of crazed citizens. The opponents will be coming from all sides – in front of, behind you, or even above you.

Common tactics back in RE4 make their return into Resident Evil 4 Remake. We can see that Leon can still take a shot into villagers’ faces, briefly stunning them and opening them up to a well-placed roundhouse kick.

Leon can even lure foes into small barns with lanterns just looming dangerously overhead. Shooting these will cause them to erupt, spilling oil and flame on everything underneath. Unfortunately, there was a cow casualty in the footage. Hope it gets cooked to medium rare.

Barricading yourself into buildings also returns. It would be great if we could still push bookshelves in front of open windows so that we can funnel enemies into just a certain direction.

Last, but definitely not least, is the introduction of the chainsaw-wielding cultist. This terrifying foe was quite the challenge especially in the early game when Leon has limited ammunition and upgrades. His very presence is made aware by the ominous whirring of his chainsaw’s blades. When you do see him rear his ugly head, it is quite a sight as he is much bigger than most of the villagers and has his face hidden under a burlap sack.

The story trailer, on the other hand, contains many other familiar scenes from the rest of the game. We are also treated to quick snippets of iconic characters, such as Ashley Graham (who now has a fashionable orange coat), Luis, and Salazar.

One cool bit of goodies in the Deluxe and Collector’s Edition are the “Filters”. These cosmetic filters can be applied in-game to give it quite a different look and feel. Head over to ourTwitch channelif you want to see us play the original RE4 live.
