Riot’s MMO Has Been “Reset” after 3 Years of Development

Riot Games has provided an update on its League of Legends MMO, which is still in development but whose release is still several years away.

Hey all – We know many of you are hungry for news about the@riotgames#MMOproject, and we really appreciate your patience and the incredible support you’ve shown us so far. I’m writing to update you today on where we’re at. And before anyone panics: yes, we are still working on…

The team has worked under the watchful eye of new technical director Vijay Thakkar, who has been responsible for outlining the project’s technical aspects. As they return to square one, Riot Games does not expect to provide any news about it in the short or medium term. In fact, the company’s co-founder believes that we will have to wait “several years” because this “silence” will give the team time to focus. “We understand the excitement and eagerness for new information, but we ask for your trust during this silent phase.”

Little had been revealed about the original MMO, although Greg Street, the former game producer (no longer working at Riot Games), hinted that the game would implement raids. “Anyone who knows me from my days as a World of Warcraft developer knows that I love dungeons and raids,” he said. He also stated that one of the things he could comment on about the MMORPG is that its features wouldn’t please everyone. “We’re going to make some decisions that you might not agree with. Players want different things in their games, and that’s okay.”

Riot has taken three years to give us more information about the MMO, and now another long period of silence is coming. “Resetting our development path also means that we’ll be in the dark for a long time, probably several years,” confirmed Marc Merrill. For the executive, the lack of news is good news. In any case, it is clear that the ‘League of Legends’ MMO, codenamed ‘Project F’, still has a long way to go.

The news of the development reset for the League of Legends MMO comes at one of Riot Games’ weakest moments. The company laid off half a thousand employees earlier this year and has struggled greatly to continue expanding its game catalog. Some projects announced five years ago, such as the 2KXO fighting game, are still pending release. In some cases, the situation is even worse, and we have barely received any information since they were announced, such as the arrival of Wild Rift on consoles or the forgotten Action RPG.
