The Playstation State of Play shows off new Rise of the Ronin gameplay trailer spotlighting combat, exploration and player decisions.
Aspromisedthe PlayStation State of Play showed new footage of Rise of the Ronin. The PS5 exclusive is Team Ninja’s next major RPG set during the Boshin War. Today’s unveiling took a look, especially at the game’s tense combat and open-world traversing.
As you would expect Team Ninja will give players several options when it comes to the Ronin-styled combat including “hybrid Japanese-western weapons”. For example the Fire Pipe, a flamethrower-type weapon that can set fire to numerous enemies at a time and set off explosive barrels. It can also be used as a bayonet to fend off blades and counter rifle shots, it is very versatile indeed.
But what you end up using will be determined by combat style and the enemies you encounter. Keeping in mind what they’re armed with and what’s the best option to gain advantage of the battle.
The developer knowns fans of their games love a good melee fight and the new trailer isn’t short on these heated encounters for Rise of the Ronin. Expect blocking, perfectly timed parries and stance to be all factors in the upcoming game. Use the Grappling Rope to get straight into the action by pulling foes to your position. You can even launch yourself to perform a stealthy assassination.
When it comes to getting around in late 19th century Japan you have a few options such as travelling on horseback and grappling to rooftops. Depending on how you want to tackle a situation you may opt for a mix of grapple hook and then glider. The glider looks like it has wings, which can be easily deployed mid-air. It’s a great way to suddenly drop in and surprise an enemy or two.
As for player agency, choices are many. Whether you decide to help a character such as Igashichi to fend off hostile guards is up to you. Creating bonds with such characters will unlock some further features that are hinted at. Who you choose to get closer to will also impact the overall story and how it progresses.
The gameplay footage is playing natively on PS5, it looks smooth and fluid especially when it comes to traversing the world. Switching effortlessly from grapple to glider (or Avicula as the device is called in the game) to horseback.
You can certainly see influence from Team Ninja’s past titles such asNioh 2andWo Long Fallen Dynasty. But with an open world in Rise of the Ronin there looks to be more freedom.
