Rogue Spirit is a new Roguelike that Has You Possess Your Foes
Rogue Spirit is a newly released action roguelike that has you possess the bodies of your fallen enemies.
The bright and colorful kingdom of Midra is in need of help, as they have been attacked by demonic invaders. Armies of Chaos have split the thin line between the realm of the living and the spirit world. Midra needs a hero, and you are the only one equipped to tackle this quest. The only problem? You’re dead!
Players follow the ghostly visage of the Prince of the Kingdom of Midra. You have been awoken from your eternal slumber, proving that there really is no forever. Death was merely an inconvenience for you, as you still have a duty to your kingdom.
Your ghostly body floats above the oriental cityscapes and forests, looking for the perfect target to haunt. Being an undead spirit without a corporeal form definitely has its perks.
Rogue Spirit will have some light stealth mechanics, as you will need to gain the element of surprise in the absence of working fingers. Due to your translucent body, enemies won’t be able to see you too well as you creep up next to them. If you’re lucky enough, you can just go and brute force your way into an unsuspecting target, possessing them outright.
Possessing your foes will grant you access to that character’s skills and abilities. In total there are 18 different archetypes that you can gain by possession. You will be able to take control of Marksmen who excel at crossbow usage, or Deadeyes that love bows and taking the high ground.
Slicers are like Wild Heart’s umbrella weapon users, but these use deadly fans to cut their enemies to shreds. The Crusher is a heavy fighter that uses brute strength and two giant maces to… well, crush things.
Each of the 18 archetypes has vastly different playstyles, so it will take a bit of getting used to. You will also need to adapt, as your favorite character class may not be available at all in your succeeding runs. We also don’t know how durable these possessed bodies may be, so we may need to be swapping forms multiple times throughout each run. Of course, I’m sure the soul of the possessed wouldn’t be enjoying having to share his body with the ghost of a mystical prince.
The realm of Midra is loosely based on Japanese spirits and folklore. As such, those interested in Japanese culture will definitely have an enjoyable ride in Rogue Spirit. The visuals are very bold and distinct, giving off wonderful Asian vibes. Enemies are also quite remarkable, represented by both Japanese soldiers as well as demonic oni.
Like other roguelikes, Rogue Spirit will have procedurally generated areas that are made of primary tilesets. Biomes include forests inhabited by gentle spirits, divine peaks that pierce the heavens, humble villages of the Midra kingdom, and messy swamps and marshes.
Rogue Spirit won’t be all about combat, either. The fighting will be broken up by the occasional puzzle that must be resolved with your ghostly powers. Sometimes you will need to organize some rocks into a special ritual. Other times you just want to make a rock roll down a hill and destroy anything in its path. Simplicity is often the finest solution.
Replayability in Rogue Spirit will come in the form of unlocking different modifiers and trying out the time trial mode. You can unlock different modes like “Bodysnatcher”, “Elementalist”, “Ghost Buster”, “Hard Mode”, and more to increase the difficulty and challenge of your runs.
Alternatively, you can forgo this and just play the Time Attack Mode. Try to beat the clock and complete a run in the fastest time possible. Then, try to beat your own record!
