Rogue Trader the First Warhammer 40,000 CRPG Reveals Gameplay Teaser Trailer
Rogue Trader released its first-ever gameplay trailer that contained in-engine footage of combat and companions.
“We hear thousands upon thousands of voices, screaming into the void, chanting just one phrase. “Give us gameplay, give us gameplay, give us gameplay” And who are we to refuse? Behold and tremble, our first gameplay reveal!”
Owlcat Games has suddenly surprised all Warhammer 40,000 fans with actual Rogue Trader gameplay footage. Debuted at yesterday’s PC Gamer PC Gaming Show was a minute-and-a-half-minute long trailer comprised purely of in-engine footage.
We finally get to look at an ancient map of the Koronus Expanse, the small subsector tucked away in the cornet of the universe, far from the light of the Emperor of Mankind. As such, it is a hotbed for heresy, mutants, Xenos, and other depravity. If ever there was a depiction of the Wild West in space, this would be it.
There will likely be tons of explorable planets that the Lord Trader and his retinue can explore. The ancient map is revealed to be aligned with a star chart that details some of the explorable worlds being represented as nodes and other points of interest. It should also be noted that there’s a purple swirling mist right off the side, titled “The Cauldron”. Perhaps this is where the ancient gods ofChaosare lurking and waiting to strike.
The Rogue Trader’s duty here is to further expand the reaches of the Imperium of Mankind. Instead, they find tons of resistance to their glorious crusade.
Although the trailer footage didn’t give us an idea of exactly how we’d play, we got to take a peek at how good things are starting to look. Alien worlds filled with dense flora and fauna, massive ship interiors, and other industrial complexes are just some of the locations that were teased.
We also got to take a look at some of thecompanions’ in-game models for a change. The initial group of the Rogue Trader was made up of Pasqal Haneumann, Techpriest of the Adeptus Mechanicus, Idira Tlass, an experiencedPysker, and Yrliet Lanaevyss an Aeldari Ranger whose sharpshooting skills have no equal.
Sister Argenta, a member of theAdeptus Sororitasor Sisters of battle also made her incendiary and explosive debut with a blast of purging flames. The Adeptus Sororitas are the military branch of the church and have some extremely devoted followers who borderline onfanaticismat times.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Traderwill be fully turn-based as opposed to having two options available, like inPathfinder Wrath of the Righteous. Focusing on just one game mode will ensure that Owlcat is able to create the best experience with the resources and manpower available to them.
The Rogue Trader will need to know when to best make use of his companions’ abilities to make the most of any encounter. Pasqual, for example, should be the best man (or android) for the job to take on mechanical and armored foes due to his being able to use plasma cannons mounted on his surgically implanted arms. Yrliet on the other hand is an excellent sharpshooter and can even have bullets that will pierce through multiple targets. Lining up your foes for the perfect shot would be ideal if you happen to have her in your party.
Just like other Warhammer 40,000 games, Rogue Trader will also have cover and morale systems. Effective use of cover will be of paramount importance as your retinue is mainly composed ofnormal peopleand not those of the mighty Adeptus Astartes.
As they are merely human, their morale can also break just like anyone. If this happens, their fighting prowess can be highly dampened. Making use of the Lord Trader’s “Desperate Measures” ability will trigger a righteous last stand. This last-ditch effort will rally your group, restoring their fighting spirits but running the risk of disastrous side effects. Desperation should be used sparingly, lest we ignite a spark of Chaos.
The Rogue Trader is an explorer, first, and a follower of the Imperium of Mankind second. While they do serve the Immortal God-Emperor and his ideals, the way they go about it is up to them. They are afforded much more freedom than most of the organizations within the Imperium and are authorized to affiliate themselves with mutants, Xenos, and psykers.
This constant exposure to different cultures and ideals, as well as being far from the Emperor’s Light, can cause even the most faithful to go awry. They are in charge of leading thousands of souls through space on their massive battle-barges. Their power is also so far-reaching that they even have the potential to plunge thousands of worlds into Chaos, if so they wish.
This is Owlcat Games’ way of saying our choices will definitely matter in this game.
