Sailing Era Goes Back to the Nautical Roots of Exploration
If traveling the seven seas is your kind of thing, then developer GY Games and publisher bilibili got you covered! Released just today is their newest RPG-sim, Sailing Era.
This title has players manage their own ship and its diverse crew. What makes the game special and different from things like the rogueliteShip of Fools, orLost Ark’s sailing?
Way back in the 15th century of the world, the land was the boundary of exploration. People were limited in terms of travel and knew only what was accessible to them. During this time, the barrier between continents and islands was broken due to the emergence of seafaring vessels. And thus the world opened up, bringing in tons of potential, adventures, and danger.
The player is the captain of one such vessel in Sailing Era. They are one of the pioneers of sea travel and thus have been able to “master” it somewhat. You are also able to attract quite the budding crew, whose talents and personalities will be sure to be indispensable.
We have the likes of Abdullah, the Arabian Pearl diver. He will probably be the risk-taker of the bunch, and the one most reliable when it comes to treasure. Another crew member in Sailing Era is Yun Mu, a Chinese scholar coming from the Ming Dynasty. She will likely be cataloging the world, and how expansive it has become. Last on the previewed characters is Yoshitaka Shizuma, the Japanese Shipwright. Though admittedly, he does not look like one who would get his hands dirty with repairs, it is sure his experience will be invaluable to our success.
Aside from that it looks like we will be able to meet and befriend dozens of people all across the world. Other character archetypes teased were scholars, pirates, merchants, and even Ronin. Whether or not we can actually recruit them and make them tag along is another question.
Building a balanced crew that gets along with itself should be key for any successful naval journey.
Sailing Era features a map that is to scale for the real world’s landscapes back in the 15th century. As such, players will have limitless exploration and should be able to explore all the continents of the Earth. It won’t always be smooth sailing, mind you, as the seas are a harsh mistress.
Various events will challenge the player and their crew. Things like changes in current, the weather, or even gusts of wind are just some of the natural elements that will add danger to your adventures. Who knows, maybe you’ll encounter a pirate attack or two throughout the seas.
Scattered throughout the world are almost 200 different ports. Each of these will be bustling with life and the local culture. It isn’t sure yet how different each will be, but do know that these settlements will have beautiful hand-drawn art to represent their buildings and their populace.
Player captains can decide whether to invest in these ports, improving and developing them to be proper trade stations. Trade can be performed here, and prices fluctuate between different ports. Creating the best routes for maximum profit will be part of each captain’s plans.
Players will be able to choose between 10 actual ships from history to be their primary vessels. From there, they will be able to customize them fully or even create your own from scratch if you so wish.
The best ships will be needed, especially if the captain decides to participate in naval battles. Players can take on bounties to defeat legendary pirates and other villainous types. You and the enemy ships will duke it out in real-time combat, making wide turns and calculated maneuvers. Getting foes onto the correct side of your cannons will be quite a frantic experience!
If needed, you may even board enemy vessels and bring the fight to them. Hand-to-hand combat and simple melee RPG systems are in place to simulate a battle on the deck.
Sailing Era seems to be quite a sound and light sailing simulation RPG. The game is currently available on PC via Steam and Epic Games for $24.99, but is on a special 10% launch discount, bringing it down to $22.49. Sailing Era will also be released on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles eventually.
There’s also a free demo available on Steam for those captains that may be wary to commit to exploring the seven seas on their own just yet.
