Silent Hill Makes a Massive Return As Konami Announces Four New Games and a Movie
Silent Hill fans, rejoice! After 10 long years since the last game is the confirmation of four new titles set in the Silent Hill universe.
Looks like the publisher is now trying to make amends. They announced now one, but four new titles that will dig deeper into the mythos of Silent Hill. Accompanying this is a new movie, titled Return to Silent Hill and will feature the same director as the 2006 sleeper hit.
There’s a lot here, so let’s get straight into it!
The biggest and most exciting of announcements unveiled in the Silent Hill presentation was that of the confirmation of the Silent Hill 2 Remake. This game will follow the original game’s story, in which our lead protagonist James receives a letter from his deceased wife. In the letter, she beckons him to return to the town where the couple shared many memories together – Silent Hill.
James then returns to the town, but it is devoid of any other living beings and is filled with an extremely thick fog. It is actually quite nice seeing that the remake will be keeping the dense fog in this game. The implementation of fog back in the original Silent Hill 2 was actually due to system limitations of the PlayStation back then, as it could not render things too far out into the distance.
Modern consoles are unshackled from this limitation (for the most part) as rendering power has drastically increased since then. While the “feature” was originally added to help the console back then, it definitely added to the lonely, isolated feeling that the players would have when exploring the town. It also added a constant sense of dread whilst outdoors, without resorting to nighttime darkness to create the scene. Thus, this is a welcome addition to the game.
The trailer features tons of in-engine footage that is beautifully rendered with some eye-popping visuals. However, no specific gameplay has been revealed so far. What we do get are some very familiar terrors, such as the ghastly nurses and the ever-persistent Pyramidhead.
Silent Hill 2 Remake is being worked on by Bloober Team, the developers responsible for the Layers of Fear games, and The Medium. The title is set to be a PC and PlayStation 5 exclusive for one year.
Silent Hill F is probably the first entry in the series that will visit an entirely new location, Japan. Hopefully, the title is probably a work-in-progress unless F holds some large significance to the story. Though it does not look like the setting is held in Feudal Japan.
All of the usual horrors that accompany the Silent Hill name have taken a trip over to the East, into a small Japanese village. We can see that the ever-looming fog has started to roll in, and then is later replaced by the world literally deteriorating before our eyes.
The trailer also features a young female protagonist, most likely a student as she walks the alleyways of the village. She is eventually captured by the darkness, and then the camera cuts to a new scene. In place of the village, the girl is now on a small flowery barge approaching a Shinto gate. On the banks are tons of waterlogged pale bodies, glistening in the moonlight.
The bodies start sprouting some otherworldly red flowers that also eventually engulf our heroine. That’s not the worst of it, as we are then suddenly treated to the girl’s face falling off.
Silent Hill F’s story is being penned by Ryukishi07, a famous manga author who has works in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres. Fans seem to be really glad that this particular writer has been attached to the project, as his works have critical acclaim.
Unfortunately, no release date has been revealed, even a year.
Next up is a title that looks to be trying something more unique. This is called Silent Hill: Downfall. Attached to the title are Annapurna Interactive, and the award-winning No Code development studio.
Previous games by No Code include the phenomenal Observation and Stories Untold. These games had the player mostly be an observer in the happenings. They control a camera instead of physically interacting with the world, or reviewing footage and documents in order to shed some light on the mysteries.
If their previous works are anything to go by, Silent Hill Townfall will likely follow a similar unique format. The brief teaser footage was primarily of a small handheld TV being interlaced with a black-and-white ocean.
We can expect to view many horrific happenings on the portable television, and probably have to decipher the secrets through that medium. This is a refreshing take on the titular game, as those focused primarily on the action-horror experience.
Last for the games is Silent Hill Ascension. Unlike everything else announced thus far, this will be an interactive multiplayer experience. Its tagline is “Face Your Trauma Together”. By the looks of things, this will be somewhat similar to Until Dawn, or the other Dark Pictures games, but will be on a grander scale.
The teaser trailer features a demonic monster with some odd-looking armor. It is also accompanied by various chat messages, not unlike what you would see on Twitch. Phrases like, “I hear it”, “RUN”, and “CAN WE SAVE HER??” flash on the screen.
Last in the news was the confirmation of another Silent Hill movie. Just like the remake, it will focus on the story of the second game. The director of the original film, Christophe Gans, has been tapped to helm the movie as well.
The film is in early pre-production so we don’t expect to have much news on it for quite some time.
