Skills, Survival and the Armor Layering System in Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Warhorse Studios has shared a video for their upcoming realism based action RPG,Kingdom Come: Deliverancethat covers several of the game mechanics they are developing, culminating in a closer look at their unique armor layering system.

Statsandskillsare the foundation of everything a player does.  Skillsimprove as you playthrough the game, whether it’s riding horse, sword fighting, sneaking, or lockpicking. If you’re running into a situtation where you aren’t at the aptitude you’d like, you’re able to visit a trainer to improve your skills.

Itemsthemselves have their own qualities such as rate of decay forfoodand degradation ofweaponsand must be managed accordingly. There are many types of weapons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but player skill can compensate for this, so don’t neglect your craft!

Survival elements are a big part of the realism of the game, and present the player with many choices and decisions. Youmust eat and rest to be effectivein yourquests. If you are injured combat will be more difficult. If you are tired you will not be able to negotiate with others effectively. Even being drunk has its own benefits and consequences, as you get a toughness boost but will suffer the next morning!NPCsand animals use this same system, so this can be exploited! Just be wary for that sneaky rabbit who stealths to your backside…

The presentation finished with an overview of their dynamicarmorlayering system, and it’s impressive. There are 4 layers of clothing players can equip, with20 total slotsfor armor, weapons and accessories. Yes, that’s not a typo, 20 slots! You’re not donning and doffing 4 chintzy pieces of gear as you do in most games, instead you’re getting dressed to the nines, or in this case the twenties.

The layer system specifically for armor is particularly unique. It requires a lot of processing power which wasn’t possible before. But now, Warhorse has been hard at work perfecting the process so that layers don’t pop into each other and characters can be cloaked in multiple layers realistically. Gambeson, chainmail, plate armor and a tabard or coat all stack upon each other in a realistic way and each layer matters to the player. The outfit is completed with form or function head protection. In the vid, we are treated to a demonstration of the protective qualities of the burly gear in real life, including some 300-like Spartan chest kicks and mace-on-person abuse.

All of these fancy layers of armorhave to be cared for and repaired to be effective. It also has to be kept clean or people won’t want to talk to you. You can take this a step further and loot anything on an NPC. You can even steal someone’s identity if you can play the part. Clothing matters based on the situation, fancy clothing helps you to navigate a party, and rags may be useful when you need to talk to beggars. The game’s systems are designed to support the player’s choices, not work against them.
