Sony announces PlayStation 5 Pro
Sony announces PlayStation 5 Pro, the new console in the PS5 family, set to release on November 7 with many technical improvements, and at a “premium” price.
Sony has unveiled it, as expected, during today’s Tuesday Technical Presentation, led by Mark Cerny, the well-known lead architect of PS5, PS4, and previously PS Vita.
A key figure at Sony, Cerny proudly presented what is poised to be the most powerful console in the coming years, at least unless Microsoft surprises with an announcement of their own console.
In the 9-minute video, Cerny reviewed the PS5 Pro’s new features, showcasing several gameplay clips compared to the PS5, without revealing any new games.
Sony saved that detail for the end of the video, and the spot revealed the two most anticipated numbers: PS5 Pro will launch on November 7 and will cost $699.99. But, importantly! This is the price for the console without a disc drive, featuring 2TB of storage. If you want the disc drive, you’ll need to purchase it separately.
The PS5 Pro will have the same height as the original PS5, and the same width as the PS5 Slim, ensuring compatibility with the Disc Drive sold for the PS5 Slim.
The console’s side plates can also be swapped out. Naturally, the PS5 Pro will be compatible with all PS5 accessories, such as PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore, with the same interface and services.
To make it easier to understand what makes the PS5 Pro special beyond its spec sheet, Mark Cerny highlighted three main factors:
Cerny acknowledges that despite the innovations brought by the PS5 four years ago, players still have to choose between two graphics modes, Resolution or Fidelity (favoring graphic quality) versus Performance (60 fps or higher frame rates, but with lower graphics quality).
Cerny used games likeThe Last of Us Part II, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, or Hogwarts Legacyto demonstrate that with the PS5 Pro, you won’t have to sacrifice scene details, background elements, or reflections. These are just some of the games that will benefit from PS5 Pro and will receive specific patches to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s capabilities. These include:
Additionally, more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games will benefit from PS5 Pro’s Game Boost, which can stabilize or improve performance and enhance image quality in some PS4 games. With PS5 Pro, the big news is that there will be no need to choose between Performance and Fidelity modes.
