Sony Is In talks To Acquire The Parent Company of FromSoftware

Sony Group Corporationis in discussions to acquireKadokawa Corporation, the Japanese giant that owns Hidetaka Miyazaki’s studio. The deal could be finalized in the coming weeks, sources claim.

Sony and Kadokawa could join forces onPC, Steam Deck, PS4, and PS5. New reports indicate that the PlayStation group plans to buy the parent company of FromSoftware along with other anime and manga companies.

The studio, known forElden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, which is also available on other platforms like Xbox and Switch, could be part of the operation and become exclusive to SIE.

The information comes from Reuters, which broke the story citing two sources familiar with the matter. According to them, the tech giant is looking to add it to its entertainment portfolio.

Now the aforementioned outlet states that talks between the two parties are ongoing, and if completed, the same sources claim the deal could be signed in the coming weeks.

Kadokawa’s shares closed with a 23% increase at their daily limit. Its market capitalization was around $2.7 billion before the Reuters report.

The curious part is that Sony Group Corporation declined to comment when asked by the outlet, and Kadokawa Corporation said they could not provide any remarks.

Sony already has a 2% stake in Kadokawa, and as previously mentioned, also holds a share in FromSoftware, but had not made similar moves regarding either of them.

Kadokawa is the parent company of numerous subsidiaries in gaming, publishing, film, anime, and manga. In gaming, it owns companies likeACQUIRE, FromSoftware, Gotcha Gotcha Games, and Spike Chunsoft.

Interestingly, Kadokawa Game Linkage, which manages media outlets likeFamitsu and Dengeki, is also a game publisher and would be part of the acquisition. Sony’s stake in FromSoftware is 14.09%.

If confirmed, the deal would be significant for both the gaming and entertainment industries. Sony already owns Crunchyroll, which it merged with Funimation, so this would provide unique access to online anime content.
