Sony Layoffs Affect 8% or About 900 Employees
Sony announced the dismissal of 900 employees, representing 8% of its workforce, in response to the changes occurring in the video game industry. These layoffs have impacted a significant number of their major of Sony Studios, such as Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Firesprite.
In the statement issued by Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, they acknowledged that it was “an extremely difficult decision“, affecting “incredibly talented individuals who have been part of our successes, and to whom we are very grateful.“
The corporate statement explains that these layoffs are necessary for the company to “take a step back” and understand how it can “meet the expectations of developers and players and continue to propel future technology in gaming.”
Sony is not the only company announcing job cuts in the gaming sector. Last month, Microsoft laid off 1,900 employees from Activision Blizzard and Xbox, and Unity dismissed 25% of its staff. Other companies, such as Google, Snapchat, eBay, PayPal, DocuSign, Okta, Block, Discord, Electronic Arts and Twitch, have also made similar announcements.
The video game industry is currently facing turbulent times, much like the broader technology sector.
