Sophie: Starlight Whispers is an upcoming Metroidvania experience that combines pixel art graphics and RPG elements with a profound and thought-provoking narrative.
As Astrolabe Games and Brazilian studio Youth Gaming proudly present Sophie: Starlight Whispers, prepare to embark on an unforgettable adventure. Players follow the journey of Sophie, a determined and resilient young girl who embarks on an extraordinary quest through the kingdom of Sharam. She is driven forward by mysterious figures she perceives as hallucinations.
This upcoming Metroidvania combines meticulous level design, and a captivating combat system, mixed in with a thought-provoking narrative to create an experience like no other.
Step into the kingdom of Sharan, where darkness has unleashed an incurable disease, plaguing its inhabitants. Amidst this chaos, Sophie emerges as the sole individual unaffected by the affliction. However, her immunity arouses suspicion among the people, who blame her for their suffering.
Determined to unearth the truth behind her immunity and the nature of her supposed hallucinations, Sophie embarks on a journey of self-discovery and magical development.
Sophie: Starlight Whispers seamlessly blends different gameplay elements together into a unique tapestry of its own. Whether exploring the enchanting corners of Sharam, forging meaningful connections with intriguing characters, engaging in combat to grow stronger, or unraveling the secrets of the main storyline, players have the agency to shape their own adventure.
The game features a large number of carefully crafted environments teeming with unique characters, collectible items, and a range of challenging puzzles.
Complemented by its detailed and vibrant pixel art, Sophie: Starlight Whispers provides a much brighter look and feel as opposed to the darker nature that most Metroidvanias adopt. Wrapping everything up is a soulful soundtrack that enhances the atmospheric journey throughout Sophie’s tale.
Sophie’s humble journey begins merely with her trusty longsword and a limited move set comprised of simple jumps and dashes. As players delve deeper into the inner workings of Sharan, unlock four distinct types of magic spells. These are categorized as Offensive, Medicinal, Spatial, and Psychic. Experiment with these spells, strategically mixing and matching them in limitless ways to suit your playstyle. Each school of magic will also have a simple skill tree, offering players flexibility in choosing what kind of spells they unlock.
Witches’ Mark is an offensive spell that creates a marked location on the ground in front of Sophie. Any enemy caught in its area will take increased damage for a short period of time. Tales of Fright is a Spatial spell that will horrify any enemies, causing them to flee in terror. Material Split will create a shadow clone of Sophy, allowing her to swap places with this clone at any time.
Unleash the powerful synergy between swordplay and magical attacks to overcome unthinkable foes. The environment itself holds many surprises, providing valuable yet unexpected boons during battle. Keep a watchful eye on your surroundings as certain plants can restore sprint energy or replenish your Essence. Show resourcefulness and bravery as you navigate the depths of adversity.
Sophie: Starlight Whispers integrates RPG elements into gameplay, adding a bit of much-needed depth and progression that complement the enthralling narrative. As Sophie gains experience, her skill level will grow, enhancing her fighting style and allowing for greater customization.
Players can discover collectible magic items and accessories that provide crucial boosts in dire situations. You will pick up your standard healing potions, or even find powerful artifacts that have massively useful effects. One example is the Agility Cloak, a piece of clothing that will immediately refill Sophie’s dash charges when her health goes below a certain threshold.
Astrolabe Games is thrilled to participate in the “BitSummit Let’sGo!!” event, where Sophie: Starlight Whispers will be showcased. It will also be playable on the show floor at this event. While a downloadable demo is unavailable, the development team is “working on it”.
