Space Marine 2 Showcases Its Carnage in an Extended Gameplay Trailer

Space Marine 2 shows off its grandeur in a nearly 15-minute-long extended look at some uninterrupted, brutal gameplay.

Publisher Focus Entertainment is on a gameplay trailer roll as they are hard at work dropping back-to-back bombshells for two of their upcoming games. First wasBanishers: Ghosts of New Edenwhich is being developed by DONT NOD, primarily known for Life is Strange and Vampyr. However, now we will talk aboutSpace Marine 2, which is being spearheaded by Saber Interactive.

What new things have we learned about theTyranid threat? Let’s find out!

Space Marine 2’s extended gameplay trailer opens up a bit slower than the explosive footage we’ve seen so far. This grants it a chance, however, to set the stage quite nicely. Viewers are greeted by the extreme sense of size and scale that the Emperor imposes. The planet’s city is a gargantuan monolith, dwarfing even the largest of Earth’s cities. Everything is just so extremely massive that it makes you feel quite small in the grand scheme of things. It is actually a nice contrast to Darktide’s more claustrophobic locations, but both portray the source material quite accurately.

But small we are not. Our player character takes the role of Captain Titus, a grizzled veteran and also a Primaris Space Marine. This makes him even faster, stronger, and angrier, than his normal Space Marine brethren. Standing at about 8 feet tall, Titus dwarfs the local militia called the Imperial Guard. We are also treated to how grimdark this setting truly is, as the scene opens up with a public execution for deserters. You’d think the Commissars would let this go, considering the entire planet risks annihilation.

Space Marine 2 also brings upon a greater sense of war that the first game wasn’t able to convey at the time. The original game was not able to show the might of the Imperial Guard in its full fury, perhaps due to the technology at the time. This has changed greatly, as we can see dozens of Guard taking up arms against the hundreds of Tyranids that swarm the screen at any given time. Yes, hundreds.

The Tyranids really feel like a formidable foe. As seen in previous footage, they are a race under a hive mind. They devastate planets by completely and utterly overwhelming them with their unlimited numbers. It looks like developer Saber Interactive took some technology from one of their other games, World War Z, and implemented it into Space Marine 2. Just like the zombie looter shooter, the Tyranids completely overwhelm areas, moving like a deadly wave of claw and carapace.

Titus and his Space Marine battle brothers immediately engage as the hordes descend upon them. Space Marines know no fear, as they selflessly charge into battle. We finally get a good and uninterrupted look at how combat looks, and it is extremely visceral.

Enemies explode into satisfying mists of blood, stopping in their tracks from your Heavy Bolter rounds. Body parts fly around in every direction, especially if you use a frag grenade to clear an area. But the meat of Space Marine 2 is the melee combat.

The original Space Marine game had extremely satisfying combat, even if it got a bit repetitive as time went along. Space Marine 2 looks to be more of the same, but better. You can immediately swap into melee hits from range, sweeping your trusty chainsword around. Minor foes go down quickly enough with a few swipes, but stronger Tyranid variants can take a bit more punishment.

Hit an enemy enough and they will eventually get stunned. Running up to them will allow Titus to perform an execution move that will restore his shields and reward players with an extremely graphic animation.

Captain Titus’ strength and agility are also put on highlight as he can literally catch enemies that launch themselves at him. Catch them by the tail and you can fling them into the direction that they came from. Sometimes you don’t even need to catch them with your fists, as your chainsword can meet them in the air instead.

Space Marine 2 also made a sudden announcement in terms of their antagonists. At the very end of the trailer, we can see Titus walking towards a fallen Silver Tower. Magical bolt projectiles are flying to him, and that’s when he jumps up and charges forward. The trailer abruptly cuts off here.

Eagle-eyed fans of the Warhammer 40,000 universe are probably familiar with the Silver Tower and everything in the scene. Focus Entertainment just confirmed that the Thousand Suns traitor legion will play a role in the game. How big of a role Chaos will play is anyone’s guess at the moment. Only time will tell.
