Star Wars Jedi Survivor Gets First Gameplay Trailer
The best part? We got to see about 2 minutes of in-game footage (minus the HUD). Cal Kestis has never looked better than he does now. There’s a lot to unpack and gawk at, so let’s jump straight in!
Lighting effects, in particular, look gorgeous and they definitely set the stage and mood of each environment. This is even more so important as lighting also affects lightsabers and how they illuminate the nearby surroundings as well as how well they cut hapless foes into shreds (well, not really due to the game’s Teen rating. No dismemberment here!).
We can also appreciateStar Wars: Jedi Survivor‘s protagonist, Cal. He has aged quite nicely, like a bottle of fine wine. He now sports a rugged beard that makes the lad look quite dashing. Of course we also get lots of footage of his faithful droid companion, BD-1.
Cal is no longer a budding Padawan in Jedi Survivor. He is now a fully-fledged Jedi Knight. He must venture out through parts unknown to prevent the galaxy from further descending into chaos.
Combat is another thing that the soulslite game has improved upon. Star Wars: Jedi Survivor will now feature multiple lightsaber fighting styles. Out of nowhere, Cal now knows how to dual wield sabers, use them like a saber staff, and then make use of a heavier fighting style with a cross-guard saber similar to the New Trilogy’s Kylo Ren.
The cinematic souls-like combat also makes a return in Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. Since the combat style was one of the strongest points of the first game, Respawn Entertainment would be fools not to continue the trend. Battles look as quick and frantic as before, but with the added spice of new powers and the aforementioned new saber styles.
Some new powers included Force gripping multiple foes at once, lifting them haplessly into the air. Another amusing ability was when Cal pulled a Stormtrooper towards himself, only to force the soldier to unleash a barrage of blaster fire towards its allies. Talk about friendly fire!
As usual, no man is an island, and Cal is no different. While old faces Greez and Merrin do not make an appearance in the trailer, we get to see the Jedi Knight still interact with tons of friendly faces. One looks to be an actual companion that will travel with us at some key story moments. Cal and this roguish character were even performing a coordinated attack that needed both of their expertise to pull off.
We will also get to face off against tons of new enemy types, and special bosses. We will still get our usual fodder Stormtrooper foes. However, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor will also have us face against battle droids from the original trilogy. It is a welcome sight to see how interconnected the trilogies are, and sometimes people do forget that those comical robots played a huge part in history.
Bosses look just as menacing as ever. We will fight against the usual master swordsmen, melee fighters, and even various violent local creatures. There’s a very healthy variety of foes to take down from the trailer alone.
