Star Wars Outlaws Could Be Released This Year
Just asUbisofthas announced, next Tuesday, April 9th, we will have the full trailer for the story ofStar Wars Outlaws.
It will be released on YouTube at9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST, at which point we will be able to see Kay Vess again, the protagonist of this original story set between episodes V and VI.
Additionally, the trailer could serve to announce the release date of the game. A date that could be before the show and directly compete with Hellblade II as the game of the month of May. Or, simply, serve as a teaser to announce its presence at Ubisoft Forward.
Following this announcement, some have noticed that pre-order promotions for Star Wars Outlaws are appearing in stores worldwide, suggesting that Ubisoft is about to start promoting the game.
On the other hand, the game has been classified in a new territory:Brazil. The video game classification body has assigned it a rating of “not recommended for children under 14 years old.” In March,Ubisoft’sgame was already classified inSouth Korea, where it received a surprising rating of +19, equivalent to PEGI 18 in Europe.
Additionally, the fact that it has been classified by age in several markets makes us think that its release onPS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PCis imminent. So far, there have been some hints, but never a final confirmation that it would be released this year.
Star Wars Outlawscould be one of the big games in the second half of the yearStar Wars Outlawsis developed by Massive Entertainment, a Swedish subsidiary of Ubisoft, which this year has just released another open-world game with Disney, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and is also working onThe Division 3. It will be a third-person action adventure in an open world, the first of its kind in Star Wars. Its narrative director, Navid Khavari, said that the game will be “deeply immersive.”
Regarding the chronology, we know thatStar Wars Outlawsis set between “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” and will feature Jabba the Hutt as a character… who has just received his prized Han Solo carbonite figure.
In many ways, Star Wars Outlaws offers what we already know works from Ubisoft games and brings it to an immensely rich setting filled with stories and possibilities. More specifically, to a period set between the events of the films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
And while it’s not guaranteed that we’ll encounter Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett, or Chewbacca, distancing itself from the Skywalker clan is a smart move that opens up new and interesting doors. In fact, we’ve seen how Han Solo is trapped in carbonite, and engaging in deals – and tricks – with space crime syndicates will eventually draw the attention of Jabba the Hutt or the Pykes. And watch out, because amid the chaos, a new criminal syndicate known as the Ashiga clan will be introduced in Star Wars.
But in the end, the plan remains the same: to offer the best of Ubisoft’s open-world games and bring them to the most beloved and celebrated era of Star Wars: the classic trilogy. More specifically, to one of those lost chapters between the movies.
In any case, the premise of Star Wars Outlaws is a strong commitment to narrative adventure set in an open-world on a galactic scale. And that will inevitably invite comparisons to games like Watch Dogs, Grand Theft Auto, or Starfield. Although, to be fair, Ubisoft’s move to take us into space and pilot our own ship already gives this adventure several additional points.
For now, what’s been proposed is a breath of fresh air in many recurring elements seen over the past few years. And we’re not going to deny it: if the intrepid Kay Vess turns out to be as intriguing as promised, she’ll quickly earn the love and devotion of Star Wars fans.
One less rival for Kay Vess! Taking this into account, could Ubisoft be preparing to follow its usual steps and announce a release date in a couple of months for Star Wars Outlaws with tomorrow’s story trailer?
