Starfield Devs Tease “New Ways of Traveling” and City Maps
In a response to a recent post on the Starfield reddit, Bethesda outlines new features coming to the game including “new ways of traveling” and the addition of city maps.
In response to a post on the Starfield reddit, Bethesda have mentioned some upcoming features they are working on for the open-world RPG. One particular line reveals they are working on “new ways of traveling” in the game.
Starfield had a massive launch of galactic proportions, letting players explore an expansive space system with over 1000 planets to land on. One key feature missing was the ability to use some sort of transportation while exploring planets. Bethesda did comment previously that this was intentional, for a slower pace of planet discovery. But feedback from fans on the latest patch notes has many asking for more.
A spark of hope has now appeared through one post on the reddit from the devs. As to what “new ways of travelling” actually means isn’t exactly known. It has caused speculation of whether this means planet rovers are able to drive around on the surface. It could mean a new way to flySpaceships, letting you actually land manually. There could be newArmorthat could allow for even faster travel, such asPower Armorsimilar toFallout 4but with some super speed. There could even be fast travel points or a space taxi to hop on instead the current space to well-knownlocations.
Another key feature mentioned in the post is that they working on adding city maps. Starfield currently doesn’t have a city map system, so you need to use your mini-navigation and memory to figure out where to go. This can slow things down a bit, especially if you aren’t familiar with the area or not a fan of following icons. City maps would make it easier to pinpoint where to go, especially when you’re raring to get back to exploring the galaxies.
Other addition in quest fixes, FSR3 and XeSS. The timeframe for these updates is expected in “early next year”.
Hey everyone, first, we read all the feedback here and greatly appreciate it and all the time and thought you put into the game. This small update was to mostly address the “pet-asteroid” so many asked about following our last larger update, and we wanted to get that out before the holiday.
We’ve been hard at work on many of the issues you’ve posted, and expect an update early next year that will include a large number of “in-progress” quest fixes as well as FSR3 and XeSS. Though we fixed several quest issues from occurring, in-progress quest fixes are much harder to fix and we’ve built a new system to correct those without you having to roll back your save.
We’re also hard at work on many of new features you asked for, from city maps, to mod support, to all new ways of traveling (stay tuned!). These will be rolling out with a regular cadence of fixes and updates we expect to have roughly every six weeks. If something can be done in a smaller hotfix in between (like the asteroid), and we feel it’s safe, we’ll get one of those out as well. Safe is the key here. We do take a lot of time to test even the smallest change in a game this large and dynamic.
Hope this information helps. If there are items you want more info on, or issues to make us aware of, keep posting here or our official Discord. Thanks again for all your support of us and the game.
In case you missed it, Starfield launched in September as has since surpassed 12 million players. Bethesda hope that the game’s longevity will span years to come with a similar experience to Skyrim’s 12-year record. More content is underway for the game, including the Shatter Space Expansion.
