Starfield is the Biggest Bethesda Game Launch with 6 Million Players
Bethesda reveals that Starfield is now the leading launch for their entire history of games with over 6 million players.
It looks like Starfield has now skyrocketed to the number-one spot for Bethesda game launches. The developer revealed that not only has Starfield now surpassed 6 million players at launch, but it’s now Bethesda’s most major launch “of all time”.

Starfield has been a long time in the making, and when I say long I mean since the time when it wasn’t possible technology-wise to produce such a game. A passion project for Todd Howard, the idea for the game has been in the back of his mind since the 90s. It’s also the first new IP for the developer in 25 years.
Starfield exceeded 1 million concurrent players across all platforms today. Thanks to all the players who helped us reach this great milestone and congrats to the@BethesdaStudioshttps://t.co/5jFaCyPz4G
Across all platforms, the game gained 1 million concurrent players during its full launch. Over on Steam it peaked at 269,177 concurrent players a couple of days ago with over 500,000 viewers on Twitch at its peak. It’s also now beaten Baldur’s Gate 3 in the top-selling Steam games standing at #2 in the chart behind CS:GO which is a free title.
Although it’s not been a bed of roses for the launch. Todd Howard was under fire with a recent interview with Bloomberg when asked about PC optimisation. Starfield is considered a “next-gen PC game” meaning it is meant for more resource-hungry builds. Often it’s difficult to have all the different system setups working with a game at launch, as there are a number of combinations unlike with consoles.
Speaking of console, it’s also the first exclusive next-gen game for Xbox Series making it the most “wishlisted” game on the platform and Steam for Bethesda games according to Xbox head Pete Hines. You might be wondering with its success, what does this mean for future Bethesda titles such as Elder Scrolls 6? According to Hines who also fielded this question it’s a “case by case” situation. He went on to talk about streaming on web-enabled platforms, giving “players choice” on how they play but of course, skirted the definitive answer. Starfield could be the first of many Xbox exclusives but nothing has been confirmed for future ES titles.
We look at it on a case-by-case basis with the games that we build,. We want to make sure our games are available in so many different places. On our Xbox consoles. On PC. Also via cloud. These games can come to almost any web-enabled device. We’re looking at millions and millions of players who will have access to Starfield and other Xbox Game Studios games. It’s really about giving players choice around how they want to play and they build their library of games.
