Last period, the Steam Next Fest ran from June 19 to 26. This time around, fans will have access to the festivities from October 9 to October 16. This will let us have a week where players can explore a vast array of titles, across an even vaster number of genres.
Take this chance to take a look around, explore, and perhaps discover the next indie gem that will captivate your gamer heart. Here are 5 demos that we feel that everyone should check out.
Wecan’t stop thinkingaboutThe Thaumaturge, which is one of the highlights of this round of Steam Next Fest. The Thaumaturge is a turn-based RPG set in a dystopian version of 20th-century Poland. Specifically in Warsaw, the city is portrayed as a bustling metropolis, though with darkness underneath.
You play as Wiktor Szulski, a gifted man who hails from a long line of Thaumaturges – special men and women who can see and defeat the ominous beings called Salutors.
Think of this as a 20th-century supernatural detective tale. The Thaumaturge is highly narrative-driven and will have a lot of various plot threads going on at any given moment. It also attempts to become a true RPG in the sense that it will have morally ambiguous choices that will definitely challenge the player.
Next is Quantum Knights, which one may mistakenly assume is your average run-of-the-mill fantasy RPG. However, what this game does differently is that it mixes your heavy paladin armor with magical assault rifles.
The game is touted as an open-world third-person shooter that creates a nice blend of guns and magic. Players join the ranks of magical warriors called VOlants, who have mastered the usage of mystical weapons that have been enhanced with magic.
Quantum Knights’ visuals look jaw-droppingly good, and the game feels extremely cinematic in its presentation. Guns and magic just mix very well in this upcoming MMO. Players can mix and match playstyles as well as weapons as they try to form the most formidable battle group possible. Not much, however, has been said about how the full gameplay loop will function.
We haveanotherpromisingcontenderin thesurvivalRPG genre called Enshrouded. Survivors are plunged into the fantasy world of Embervale with nothing but their wits and their loincloths. It is up to you on how you and your 15 other friends (yes, Enshrouded has a 16-player co-op mode. Good luck getting everyone together though) will forge your journey.
You will explore the various biomes, cutting down trees and mining rocks, and eventually building up your own bustling city. If you grow your city large enough, it will attract people from all walks of life. NPCs will eventually flock to your metropolis, and set up shop for you to partake of their services.
What sets Enshrouded a bit apart from other survival games is its combat. While some survival games have fighting as an afterthought, it isn’t the case here. Enshrouded looks and plays like any proper action game, with enough varied move sets for players to be able to approach encounters how they wish. The game also has a deep skill system that allows you to grow your character in many different ways.
Unawake is a first-person high-action RPG in the Steam Next Fest that invokes many feelings of Skyrim and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Odd name aside, Unawake looks to bring extremely frantic and fast-paced fantasy action right to your doorstep. Based on the trailer footage, it seems that the game will be predominantly melee-focused (sorry, pure mages!) and feature various weapons and fighting styles.
Players will gain power by leveling up, and eventually unlocking over 20 different abilities to augment their melee slaughter. They will gain access to self-buffs or even be able to augment their weapon strike with elemental effects, and more.
Another thing of note is how detailed the game is, thanks to its usage of Unreal Engine 5. Developer RealityArts Studio is definitely making good use of the tools at its disposal, as they are able to create visuals that are extremely lifelike, blended in with gorgeous lighting effects.
Whether you’re an avid gamer looking for the next big thing, a passionate supporter of indie game development, or simply interested in exploring fresh and innovative titles, Steam Next Fest is the event for you. Do note that some extremely great games have presented themselves on the Steam Next Fest, such asLies of Pearlier this year, orTuniceven way before.
