Stellar Blade Gets Gameplay Overview at PlayStation State of Play

Stellar Blade was announced a few days ago to be featured in this February’sPlayStation State of Play. It will have you play as Eve, a warrior tasked to save what remains of humanity. Due to the destructive race wars against the Naytibas, hulking creatures protected by their tough, shield-like carapace, humans were forced to build an off-world Colony. But even their homeland has been constantly threatened by these monstrosities that came out of nowhere.

With extinction on the horizon, do you have what it takes to defeat the Alpha Naytiba and to rid humanity of the seemingly endless wars and destruction?

As with most games, Eve won’t be tackling problems on her own as she eventually meets Adam and Lily. Adam is a survivor from Earth and is hunting for a Hyper Cell, which is an energy source. Gathering Hyper Cells is a must-needed activity to sustain life in the game.

The next companion is Lily, who is an adept engineer. She’s an essential member of your squad because of her ability to upgrade your weapons and armor. The trailer also shows that upon wielding new equipment, Eve unlocks a skill. This is an interesting component of the game because gaining access to high-valued items will allow players to experiment with different builds. Not only do they provide bonuses but also unique skills.

Aside from these two companions, Eve will come across the remaining citizens of Xion, otherwise known as the “last human city”.

Xion is very reminiscent of Nier: Automata because of its old-forgotten environment. It’s connected to a semi-open world called the “Wasteland and the Great Desert”. Xion is an off-world Colony and is built under the Wasteland in the hopes of ‘hiding’ from the enemy. However, the stench of fear is ever-looming. The citizens who are living day-by-day and the struggles they need to confront just to survive speak volumes about how disgusting their situation has become because of the Naytibas.

Similar to what Adam has been doing, one of Eve’s most important tasks for the people of Xion is to collect Hyper Cells to considerably improve their lives. In doing so, the city’s citizens hope to turn the tide and bring humanity’s former glory back. But it won’t be easy since they’re initially wary of Eve’s intentions as an outsider. So, by finishing quests for them, you’ll gradually gain their trust.

Stellar Blade aims to provide a unique experience because aside from the gorgeous and diverse visuals we’ve seen in the gameplay reveal, there’s also a large array of musical tones to listen to. So, exploring the semi-open world and completing missions will feel fresh as you discover and return to areas. Most of the songs also have vocals, further enhancing the overall experience.

As players make their way across the desert, they will also need to collect Exospines or Gears, which is another way to gain experience to be able to unlock additional skills. But Stellar Blade isn’t only about becoming the most powerful warrior there is. The action game also features cosmetics in the form of clothing and accessories. Eve features tons of outfits in the gameplay overview alone, so it’s safe to say we’ll get a lot of customization options here!

The more interesting quests in Stellar Blade will have Eve travel to the Wasteland and the Great Desert, which is populated by the Naytibas, machines, and hostile robots. It’s here that you’ll engage in combat.

Stellar Blade features super fast-paced combat, which is both electric and exhilarating. In the gameplay overview, we can see Eve blasting away with her custom gun and even shielding incoming shots using her blade. What’s more, is that she can perform backflips to evade attacks, execute a cleave attack that deals great AoE damage to slice enemies in half, and execute cinematic finisher moves to end them at once.

Finally, there are multiple camps, which house supplies left by previous Airborne Squads. These rest locations let Eve access newly obtained skills, upgrade weapons, and purchase consumables. The skills also have trees that can potentially be customized depending on the player’s preference. One example is the Quadruplet to “deal a final blow and stun enemies”.

There are also different editions of the game with the Standard Edition selling for USD 69.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition, which costs USD 79.99.
