Emergence
Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.
Hey I see Cloud 9 on there! That is awesome. Always appreciated their good sportsmanship. Super glad to sees Overwatch over League, even though I play LoL with me husband, if I did not have so much money/time already invested I would switch in a heartbeat. But then again, I hate Blizzard so picking between two poisons, I will stick with the current poison.
Really surprised to see CIV over Banner Saga2 , as Civ was recently released, and while I love the game, it is unpolished in some aspects compared to Banner Saga 2.
GAME OF THE YEARFor a game that delivers the absolute best experience across all creative and technical fields.
Personally, I don’t think this field should exist, because it seems really hard, if not impossible to objectively rate. Of couse it is all opinion which game in any catagory is the best, but with other catagories, there’s a single, more specific standard to be judged, one that all the candidates share. How can anyone say which game is the “absolute best of the year” when video games are extremely different from one another. It’s like saying which is the absolute best vehicle of the year, this car, this RV, this SUV, this motorcycle, this snowmobile, or this semi-truck. Such different types of games cannot be accurately judged to be the best, and it all comes down to what each person wants in their game, and thus is completely personal preference.
BEST GAME DIRECTIONRecognizing a game studio for outstanding creative vision, game direction and design.First, these companies are all being judged for creative vision and direction based on shooter games(all FPSs except for Uncharted 4). Pretty sure there are better candidates.
But, comparing the given, I’d say Respawn, just for doing what game devs should do with their game sequels, and make them bigger and better. Also, it seems Titanfall 2 has a better balance of singleplayer and multiplayer. DOOM, great singleplayer, mediocore multiplayer. Overwatch, just multiplayer. Can’t say for BF 1, and Uncharted for me was just more of the same gameplay wise.
BEST NARRATIVEFor outstanding storytelling and narrative development in a game.Uncharted 4 for me had the best story of all the games, To me, best this year.
BEST ART DIRECTIONFor outstanding creative and technical achievement in artistic design and animation.I liked Abzu better.
BEST MUSIC/SOUND DESIGNFor outstanding audio, inclusive of score, original song, licensed soundtrack and sound design.
I just love that Demonic heavy metal, so DOOM for me.
BEST PERFORMANCEAwarded to an individual for voice-over acting, motion and/or performance capture.Everyone in Uncharted 4.
BEST MOBILE/HANDHELDFor the best game playable on mobile phones and dedicated gaming handhelds.
Real gaming is done sitting down, looking a screen for hours at a time! Not about exercising and socializing! Freaking casuals!
BEST VR GAMEFor the best game experience playable in virtual reality.
can’t comment, too busy vomiting.
BEST ACTION GAMEFor the best game experience focused around first or third person combat.
Torn between DOOM and Titanfall 2
BEST ACTION/ADVENTURE GAMEFor the best game experience that combines combat with traversal and puzzle solving.
Ratchet & Clank. Yeah, I’m a fanboy, BUT I JUST LOVED THIS GAME SO MUCH!
BEST RPGThe best game designed for rich player character customization and progression, both offline and online, including massively multiplayer.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Why not Dark SOuls 3, cause I played, enjoyed, and got more out of the Witcher DLC than Dark Souls 3.
BEST FAMILY GAME
Ratchet & Clank again.
MOST ANTICIPATED GAMEAn upcoming game that has shown significant ambition and promise in moving the gaming medium forward.
God of War for me.
As far as I’m concerned the presence of microtransations in a paid game (much less the super abusive system Overwatch uses) automatically disqualifies it from recieving any and all awards.
Totally forgot about Salt and Sanctuary. Yeah atleast a nomination would have been nice. Its a really good souls esque jump and run game.
Can someone just quickly explain how the winners are decided? The decisions on multiple categories seems a bit absurd to me.
So to write out my opinion:
BEST GAME DIRECTION should not be Overwatch(Blizzard). Yes it has neat design but I don’t think it hits all the marks. I would give it too maybe DOOM(Id) or Battlefield 1(DICE), leaning more towards DOOM.
BEST NARRATIVE I’m fine with Uncharted 4 though I thought that maybe Oxenfree should of slightly gotten it more.
BEST ART DIRECTION I’m fine with Inside getting that, I’d be fine with Abzu to get it as well.
BEST MUSIC/SOUND DESIGN I’m fine with DOOM getting that though surprised that Dark Souls wasn’t nominated.
BEST PERFORMANCE I’m fine with Nolan North winning though was slightly wishing Emily Rose got it slightly more.
BEST INDEPENDENT GAME I’m fine with Inside getting it though I’m disappointed that everyone seem to just forget that Salt and Sanctuary got released this year and was a rather fun 2D Souls-esque game. I just wish it at least got nominated.
GAMES FOR IMPACT I agree completely with That Dragon, Cancer getting that award.
BEST MOBILE/HANDHELD … Just really? Pokemon GO? I just don’t have anything else to say about how stupid the choice is to me.
BEST ACTION GAME I’m okay with DOOM getting that.
BEST ACTION/ADVENTURE GAME I don’t really think Dishonored 2 should get it, I just don’t find the game as good as its predecessor.
BEST RPG is just nope, I do not believe that DLC/Expansions should count for a nomination for what should be exclusive for just full games. They want to add an BEST EXPANSION/DLC AWARD then sure fine, put it there.
MOST ANTICIPATED GAME I don’t think should exist, an award for what is most hyped? Yes because that worked out so well for No Man’s Sky.
BEST MULTIPLAYER GAME the only award I really would give to Overwatch which brings me to…
GAME OF THE YEAR… Overwatch does not deserve this at all. It’s a fun game and I enjoy the heck out of it but no way I would give it game of the year. Heck I was watching the show with friends on PSN and we came up with all our own nominees and Overwatch barely got into the five choices for our personal game of the year nominees and we all enjoy the game.
Overall I found this Video Game Award show nearly as bad as VGX, It started strong with Kojima and Death Stranding, and the touching moment with That Dragon, Cancer winning a award but other then that it was boring. For someone who wants to show more gameplay then CGI trailers, Geoff Keighley seems to not care for the lack of them this show and with tons of advertising another thing he stated in the past he wanted to move away from.
Also the musical performances besides the DOOM one were just awful.
There is my two cents.

Zelda BotW looks very promising, even for adults. Difficulty seems on par with early Zelda or Soulsborne titles + open world + fashion legends + weapon diversity + tactical diversity… I’m looking forward to this one.
I forgot to include that they bestowed the nobel peace prize to Kojima in recognition of a lifetime of creating stuff like this:
Me too especially on Sound/Music.
I’ve never played any of the games that won awards, except Pokémon Go, so I can’t really criticize the choices too much. I’m still baffled that DS3 wasn’t at least nominated for best Art or Sound/Music.
The event felt heavy on advertisement and quite limited in its awards and choices. I felt several categories were pointless, and cringed at Phelps calling someone playing Counter Strike “a fellow athlete”
Also miffed that Dark Souls 3 lost to an expansion, and Uncharted 4 didn’t win. Boo!
But well I imagine this will grow with time and I enjoyed the Mass Effect Andromeda gameplay.
Overwatch Game of the Year… really ? So we gonna celebrate a game(not free to play) with microtransactions that give you rng lootboxes that most likely will not give you what you want ? Also best E-Sport ? They picked the ONE game that is really hard to actually watch as best E-Sport ? Too much Blizzard pandering imo. And Inside tries too hard to be weird and serious at the same time. Stardew Valley or Hyper Light Drifter would have been better choices imo.
