The Elder Scrolls Legends Argonian & Wood Elf Gameplay

Bethesda has shed new light on how 2 of theracesinThe Elder Scrolls Legendswill function in gameplay. Many of the iconic races from the series are being included in the upcoming digital card game, and this week we know a little more about how theArgonianandWood Elfraces will behave for deckbuilders via the game’sdev blog. Both of these races can be found on cards that have the Agility attribute, which means that both of these races focus on speed of attack. What separates them are their reliance on their otherattributes.

The Argonians can be found onAgility (Green) cardsandEndurance (Purple) cards. From a lore background, Argonians are a race of mysterious swamp-dwellers who draw power from their connection the Hist, which are sentient trees. In gameplay, this is translated into the ability to increase your magicka faster than your opponent. Being able to rush magicka allows you to play expensive cards a lot more quickly than your opponent. Additionally some Argonian cards get stronger as your magicka increases, further exacerbating the value of rapidly increasing magicka.

Wood Elves can be found acrossAgility (Green) cardsandStrength (Red) cards. From a lore and flavor perspective they prefer softening up targets from a distance followed by a strategic death blow. In gameplay this translates into the ability to target wounded creatures or deal nicks of damage across many creatures at once. It works a great 1-2 punch of needling targets with chip damage, and then moving in for a total kill on anything wounded. This can clear out the battlefield of enemy creatures and leave the other player exposed.

There is a lot of thought going into how these races are going to feel and behave in gameplay, and it’s encouraging to see them matched up with their lore and world vibe. It would be all too easy to just shoehorn races into actions that don’t quite fit just to suit the mechanics. Instead designing the mechanics around the qualities of the race keeps the game feeling authentic, although it no doubt presents more consideration regarding balance.
