The Inquisitor Is a Dark Fantasy About Judgement and Testing Morality
A dark and gritty adventure title called The Inquisitor gets a story trailer for PS5, PC and Xbox Series.
Developer The Dust has shared a new story trailer for the upcomingdark fantasytitle The Inquisitor. This narrative-driven adventure game is about making those difficult choices with some moral judgement on your part.
The trailer dives right into the dark, gritty setting following an alternate 1500 A.D. where Jesus didn’t die on the cross and went on a crusade to seek vengeance. To say the least, it focuses more on a vengeful justice through an army of Inquisitors centuries later in the 1500s. Their job is to enforce the ‘Holy Law’ by any means necessary. The trailer’s puppet show sets up the game by acting out a short play.
Players will follow one Inquisitor in particular, Mordimer Madderdin who is sent to a town called Konigstein which is steeped in mystery and sin. The game is part detective, as players will need to solve a number of cases and crimes. But rather than leave it at that, choices will need to be made in terms of the fate of lost souls.
The game is very story-driven, giving players agency over whether they want to dole out judgement with an iron fist or have mercy on those who have lost their way. Using skills and abilities Mordimer can uncover information about crimes by interrogating suspects or gathering evidence. He can also enter the Unworld, where he can even seek out the hidden secrets suspects have tried to hide. But entering the Unworld has risks, with a dark force set to keep him out.
While you might think this game is only about solving puzzles and gathering clues, there is a full sword-action combat system. When words fail you, you can take action with your blade. The Inquisitor has multiple endings where your choices dictate how it ends.
The game is based on a set of novels I, The Inquisitor by Polish fantasy author Jacek Piekara. The setting sounds quite bleak but will test player’s resolve in uncovering the truth and even have their own impact on what unfolds. The setup does remind me a little of Pentiment, but with an action-adventure feel.
