The Lamplighters League A Turn-based RPG Unveiled
Paradox Interactive has announced a new Turn-based RPG set in the alternate 20th century. Coming to PC and consoles.
The studio behind games such as Battletech and the Shadowrun games, is working on a new turn-based RPG called The Lamplighters League and the Tower at the End of the World. The title is based on an alternate version of the 20th century and will be coming to platforms PC, Xbox Series X|S as well as game pass later this year.
In Paradox’s Announcement Show, the studio revealed The Lamplighters League, which sets out to have a mix of gameplay styles. These include turn-based combat, real-time infiltration, and team management. The game is set during the 1930s, however an alternate version. The story is a pulp adventure where players will track down the Banished Court.
The trailer features a ragtag group of characters who are exploring a mysterious tomb but are quickly stumbled upon by armed guards. They attempt to make a swift exit sporting the stolen artifact they have just uncovered. The short scene gives a quick introduction to each of the characters’ quirky personalities and hints at their abilities. For example, the blonde bombshell Ingrid quickly subdues an enemy with some martial arts. While the quickdraw, itchy trigger finger of the group Eddie finishes him off by firing his gun. Lateef on the other hand looks to take care of the precious artifact.
We also get a brief look at something else lurking down in the depths, something more supernatural. A wild beast bursts onto the scenes, making the whole group run for their lives. Images on the Steam page reveal that Lateef is the thief of the group. Excelling in stealth and distraction. He also uses a pistol as his weapon of choice. Each character looks to have a role to play and brings their own banter.
The developer also previewed a few clips of the combat as well showed the real-time infiltration which sets it apart from their previous games. This means you can assess the situation before you take on the enemy. This sounds like a great way to plan your positions before you engage. The combat shows a mix of taking on a group straight on or using stealth to pick off lone guards. I like that there is some flexibility in the way you can handle situations, so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
Combat use turn-based tactical moves, with each character sporting unique abilities. Together, they can work on tackling different encounters. There will be a number of locations to explore, with equally formidable foes to take on. Of course, there comes rewards for taking on the Banished Court, with new resources to grant upgrades.
The title looks to have some fun interactions between this group of misfits, and I can’t wait to see what else is to be found in these dangerous locations. An Indiana-inspired, Mutant Year Zero, but with more of a focus on archaeological mysteries (instead of mutant animals) could be interesting. I’m already loving the soundtrack with the sounds of the 1930s. There are some stellartactical RPGs currently in development with also the recent announcement ofMiasma Chroniclesalso in the works.
The Lamplighters Leaguehas yet to have pinned down a release date, but will be coming to Xbox Series and PC later this year.
