The Surge Releases 14 Minutes of Limb Hacking Gameplay

Focus Home Interactive and Deck 13 have released a 14 minute gameplay trailer today forThe Surge, their upcoming mech combat RPG. Check out the gameplay with developer commentary below:

The gameplay shows main characterWarrenprogressing through a biochemical portion of theCREOfacility where something has terribly gone wrong. We get a look at some of the trademark limb targeting and hackingcombatas the player progresses through the world, which is not open but instead a Metroidvania type setup of closed offplacesyou’ll have to come back to later. We also get to see our first interaction withNPCsas you can pick upquestsalong the way to reveal more of the game’s mysterious events. The trailer culminates with a battle against a group of flamethrowingenemyofficers, who serve as one of the game’smini-bosses.

Focus Home Interactive released the following overview with the video:

Fitted with an industrial exoskeleton, you must fight your way through CREO, equipping the spoils of combat to your suit. Armor and weapons are looted from enemies after duels, in which you will take advantage ofThe Surge’s unique limb-targeting system to attack and cut off parts of the enemy you want to equip or craft.

Targeting a part of the enemy which is armored will deal less damage, but you will earn the opportunity to deal a finishing blow that will cut off the limb in-tact, allowing you to loot the spoils, gain blueprints, and tech-scrap used to level up your exoskeleton.

The Surgefeatures vertical and horizontal attacks, which are used in combination with parry’s, ducks and jumps as well as a boosted dodge – courtesy of your exoskeleton – culminating in swift, snappy, precise combat situations unlike anything experienced before.

At CREO, you will meet survivors who need help or who can offer assistance. Accepting missions can yield extra rewards, but you will have to balance that against your desire to go deeper into the complex, as the stakes grow ever higher – once dropped, your tech scrap will diminish over time.

Face the dangers of CREO and set your own challenges. Accept missions, learn more about CREO’s history and lore, and fight the various mini-bosses scattered throughout the environment, or play it safe and struggle to survive – it’s up to you.

The game is looking very enticing. We gave The Surge ourBest Visuals of E3award last year and left a Gamescomhands on playthroughimpressed. Check out ourinterviewwith them from Gamescom for more. The Surge releases this May on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Keep checking back with us for more!

Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.

Looking good so far. These demos show more enemies than were in the entirety of Lords of the Fallen, so there’s my main worry gone!Really liking that limb targeting/loot mechanic.
