The Witcher 4 May Have Geralt Return But He Might Not Be the Main Character
According to a recent interview with the voice actor who plays Geralt, The Witcher 4 won’t be focusing on Geralt but a different main character. Doug Cockle shares his best theories into the game’s main lead.
CD Projekt Red have been doing wonders with their latest titleCyberpunk 2077, especially with the expansionPhantom Liberty, but their next Witcher 4 or Project Polaris entry is the next surprise. Tidbits of the game’s details have been dropped here and there, the latest being the protagonist of the next game. According to a recent interview with voice actor Doug Cockle who plays the infamous monster hunter Geralt, the main character won’t be coming back as the main “focus” in the Witcher 4. He did share however he doesn’t have any insider info but has an inkling of a theory of who could be the next lead character.
The interview between Cockle and IGN, he revealed that CDPR won’t be centering on Geralt of Rivia in the next game. However, he is still excited to find out what direction their taking it:
Their focus for the game is not going to be Geralt. They’ve said that, so I’m really excited to see what their focus is. I have ideas but that’s all they are.
Cockle didn’t go into details about whether or not Geralt will be appearing in The Witcher 4, or appear in a smaller role such as a cameo. He did however say thatCiriwill be taking up a major role in the next few games. This could mean the next trilogy could follow Geralt’s adopted daughter, involving a multiverse of options setting-wise. Cockle explained that they set up the next games to feature Ciri as you could play her in certain scenarios inThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. He did double down he’s “no idea” what the game will be about if they don’t go down that route but definitely gives food for thought.
Previously a teaser image showed a medallion, slightly hidden in snow. But that has some to believe we could be exploring the School of the Cat which would place Ciri in the perfect setup to continue the saga. However, the medallion looks more like a lynx which is not a school mentioned yet but could be the next direction.
We do know that now nearly half the team are working on The Witcher 4. This will also be a good entry point in the series according to director Sebastian Kalemba. But don’t worry veterans as Kalemba also shared in his interview with the Italian website Lega Nerd, it will still contain elements of “lore”, still remaining familiar to Witcher fans. One things for sure, it won’t be out for some years.
The Witcher 4 won’t be out for some years, and it’ll be a long time since the previous one, so we cannot just target the audience already fond of the saga. We must also build a new community. On that note, I believe I can say it’ll be an excellent entry point for many players, without forgetting the long-time fans who still wish to follow Geralt’s adventures.
With the team wrapping up on updates for Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, the team can start to fully put the Witcher 4 in their sights. CP2077 will receive amassive patch 2.1this week which adds a host of content including the metro system, hangouts and more. The game has a major resurgence following its base game update and expansion. The expansion alone has now reachedover 4.3 millionand with theUltimate Editionnow underway that number can only grow.
CD Projekt Red are already confirmed to be working on a few projects including The Witcher 4. While not all have been confirmed title-wise, we do know that a Witcher Remake (formerly known as project Canis Majoris) is currently in the works. The first Witcher title will undergo, a facelift being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and will be a “reimagining” of the original 2007 RPG. It will be an open-world experience with plenty of quality-of-life improvements.
Also in the works is the multiplayer title Project Sirius, which last we heard had already completed its new framework. The project was restarted by the studio The Molasses Flood, who looked into some more experimental paths but ultimately decided to switch tact.
While they are working on three Witcher projects, there’s also a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel planned and an original IP also in development currently known as Project Hadar.
