THQ Nordic’s annual Digital Showcase of upcoming titles reveals long-anticipated return and sequels we didn’t see coming but welcome with open arms. There are also some safe bets, remakes, and a mysterious game.
Despite Embracer Group placing THQ Nordic in the new category of indie, double-A, and free-to-play games, they currently have 23 games in development, 13 of which have not yet been announced. And, as you’ll see, some of the ones shown at their digital event have ambitions higher than those of many big productions.
The appearance of the Gothic remake didn’t catch us by surprise, as it was the hook of the digital event. What was shown, however, was a joy. In fact, pending the other projects the company is working on, it is the current flagship of the restructured THQ Nordic.
Developed in Unreal Engine, this new remake of a classic of more than two decades aims to take us to the quintessence of role-playing and fantasy video games and, unfortunately, still does not have a release date.
Darksiders returns, although it is unclear whether with a new spin-off or a fourth numbered installment. If it follows the trend of the previous games, it would be expected that Strife would take the lead in some way. However, what is clear is that we will have to wait a while for updates.
THQ Nordic itself has unleashed the announcement, confirmed that the project is in the hands of Gunfire Games, and reserved any details related to the story, theme, or protagonist. What is clear, or at least what we can take away, is that even with Embracer’s complications, there are plans to keep the saga alive.
Titan Quest II closely follows the formula coined by Blizzard, fully inspired by Greek mythology. It must be admitted that what was shown in its latest trailer looks spectacular, especially when compared to the original, released in a distant 2006 but updated with a very convenient 10th-anniversary commemorative edition.
We were left without a release date or PC requirements, although it will also come to consoles. At least the project is in good hands: Grimlore Games, the creators of SpellForce 3, have been able to show a preview of what its gameplay, aesthetics, and role-playing elements will be. And it looks promising, to be clear.
Wreckfest will have a direct sequel, and that means chaos and destruction on four wheels. We don’t have a clue when it will be released, but we do have some interesting details: the physics and game engine will have a comprehensive upgrade to offer greater spectacle and much more realism both in driving and crashing.
One more fact: although it has just been announced, it is already possible to add it to the wishlist on Steam.
The Eternal Life of Goldman: In a time when we are eager for the return of games like Silksong, the creators of This Is the Police 1+2 surprise us with a hand-animated platformer set on a huge hand-drawn archipelago. Also its creators draw inspiration from timeless fables with their own twist and classic mechanics from games like DuckTales to make their proposal more interesting.
Space for Sale and Pikmin, after seeing its first trailer, are more than justified: a tiny astronaut lands in a small, great scenario and must investigate, adapt, and gather resources. In fact, it even has a cooperative mode.
The three big differences are that this time we are an intergalactic real estate agent, the general aesthetics, and, unsurprisingly, the absence of Pikmins. And that, like it or not, changes everything. That said, if you really want to compare, you’ll be happy to know that it has a demo on Steam and is already available in early access.
Lintukoto Reserve appears to be the new DLC for Way of the Hunter, but its release also coincides with the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase.
The creators of Little Nightmares and its sequel had already hinted that they would have something ready for THQ’s digital event, but what was shown has left us with more questions than answers. What we do know is that it promises “a vision different from anything you’ve seen before” and that in about two weeks the mystery will be revealed: Tarsier Studios’ next game will be presented at theOpening Night Live of Gamescomon August 20.
