Tyranny Developer Video Explores Character Progression, Skills and Reputation

In a new developer video forTyranny, Obsidian Entertainment gave fans a look at the progression and skills system the game is implementing. Through party gameplay with thecompanionsVerse,LantryandBarik, we got a look at how we can anticipate progressing our characters through the game. Check out the video below and keep reading for the highlights.

The video starts off showing thetalenttrees for the party members. Talents are a way for the game to differentiate playstyles. Barik has the aggressive Punisher and the tanking Sentinel. Verse can choose talents between the Duelist and archery focused Skirmisher tree. Lantry can choose between 3 trees, Sage, Quill and the healing focused Preservation. The main player character is able to access much more than the party members, being able to choose from 6 trees, Leadership, Agility, Range, Magic, Defense and Power.

Furthermore, theReputationsystem was discussed in more detail. Reputation is tracked viafactions, companions and by specificcharacters. You can mouse over characters to see your rep progress. When it comes to your impacts on other characters you gain reputation towards loyalty or fear. Raising the meters in either results in unlocking some powerful comboabilities. When it comes to factions, you increase reputation in either favor or wrath. Maxing these meters will unlock some powerful abilities or passives.

They then went on to show theskillsystem, covering some ground that has been explained before but offering some new takes. The game is classless, players can pick up anyequipmentand the skills increase as you use them. Skills combine with talents to create a big sandbox for character playstyle choice. Any time you cause, take damage or heal you earn experience in the appropriate skill. You then gain skill ranks with the next rank having a higher score to achieve. A lot of it is 1:1 such as 50 points healed equals 50 points of experience in that healing skill. Support buffs and debuffs also generate experience. When you gain skill ranks you gain character experience which level up and earn you an attribute point and a talent point that can be spent to improve your character.

The video went on to show aquestin action as well as some of the choices and outcomes that can be made. Attempts at stealth, diplomacy and just straight up aggression are all valid strategies in navigating the game’s various quests and activities, and the game’s branching narrative and positive progression feedback loop all aim to support that freedom of choice.

It’s clear that progression has been woven into everything in the game. Development for Tyranny continues along, and although we don’t have a release date yet, the game is due to release sometime this year on PC. Keep checking with us for more updates!
