Videogames That Fill That 80’s Nostalgia
We’re forging ahead in the 21st Century but for those who remember the 80’s, do you miss those simpler days? Feel like reliving some of your favorite movies or shows? Here is a list of games on the current gen that can bring you that thrill of a time where everything seemed so…plastic:
So Back to The Future Day came and went and we aren’t in the future that was envisioned, and no those things are calling hoverboards now don’t count. If you are tired of watching the films or just feel the need to be immersed in more stories around that movie, Back to the Future might fill that itch. The Game is a side story to the films and has several tie ins to the movies. It is an adventure game that is easy to just pick up and play.
With the Ghostbusters Reboot on its way are you wishing to have some time with the original cast? Here is the game for you. Ghostbusters the Game is an independent story from the movies and reunites the voices of Ramis, Akroyd, Murray, and Hudson. Many fans of the movies consider the game to be the closest they will get to a third movie. This game is a third person shooter where you use an assortment of the Ghostbusters tools, and you play as a rookie being trained by the veteran Ghostbusters.
Do you miss the original Alien Movies? Did Promethus just not cut it? Here is a Survival/Stealth Horror game focusing on Ripley’s Daughter Amanda. Taking place 15 years after the original Aliens movie on a space station that found Ripley’s Abandoned Craft, Amanda is sent to investigate her mother’s disappearance with a team. If you are hoping for a lot of Xenomorphs you will be disappointed, as the game features a single Xenomorph as the main antagonist. Instead, Amanda must use her smarts to avoid the Xenomorph.
If you loved the post apocalyptic movies of the 80’s and wished you could be Max from these films, then the game Mad Max gives you that very chance. In the game, you play as Max and get to drive in an open world wasteland fighting off raiders and upgrading the Magnum Opus’ weapons and armor. The game is considered an action adventure, but you will be doing a lot of vehicular combat and driving. This isn’t a complaint, the game actually shines in this aspect. The story opens up in the second half of the game and it is a fun side story to the films.
Did you like the Tim Burton Batman Films or the newer version by Chris Nolan? Then you would enjoy Batman Arkaham Knight. This is the first open world style Batman Game, the game is a typical Batman game with his gadgets and investigations all rolled up in an action adventure. You will encounter Batman’s villains as they unite to try and take him down. The game has an alternate mode where you can race the various Batmobiles through the characters history.
With the New Star Wars Film have you been in the mood for the Original Trilogy? Star Wars Battlefront allows you to take up the conflict that took place in those films. Many significant figures from the Original Trilogy are playable, Such as Luke, Leia, Han, Vader, and Palpatine. You can planet hop to a few planets and even use an assortment of vehicles from Star Wars. Battlefront is an Action game, with a short story, but is still a fun quick trip in nostalgia.
Did you like the boxy version of the 80’s Transformers cartoon? Well the Cell Shaded action hack and slash game brings that style back. No more hard to identify live action movie robots, Vibrant and easy to identify characters are back. As a side story to the Show, you play as the Autobots as they try to prevent the earth from being Cyberformed. You get to see a number of Iconic Transformers in this and the simplicity of the controls is fun enough to want to play the game to its end.
If you want a game that captures a lot of nostalgia in one sitting, then this Tower Defense might be the one for you. Depending on the the Army you play as, you can play as Starbright, He-Man, GI Joe and Cobra, even Assassin’s Creed. Aside from the Assassin’s Creed the game has a bunch of 80’s toys going to war with each other.
That’s a pretty good starting list of games that will give you a sense of 80’s nostalgia. I know a number of these games brought me down that memory lane, and even though the 80’s seem so recent to some of us, they’re actually a long way away. So if you are feeling like escaping on a trip to the neon and synthesizer fueled decade of the 80’s have fun with these gems.

Been a Gamer since I could hold an Atari joystick. A game worshipper who has enjoyed and analyzed a many Games. Always wanting more of the games I love.
Very nice, but it’s up up down down… Speaking of cheating, remember the Game Genie? Never had one, but it was cool. When I worked in a library ten years ago, kids would always come in looking for books containing cheats. Some things are just cooler in your youth. Ha! Good times!! Cheating in a game now just robs me of an experience rather than enhancing it.
Yes I remember 2009 well, It’s when I first played Demon Souls. I still remember the Halloween event and fighting Executioner Miralda at a level 24. I also remember the Batman game.
Yes, Hotline Miami would. I seen a few videos on that channel. My kids watch it too.
Hotline Miami would fit right in there (although I would definitly NOT show this to kids).
Also, check out theNewRetroRecordsyoutube channel, they are a label concentrating on 80s themed synthwave. I have enjoyed them for about half a year now =)
I’m afraid my nostalgia is for 2009. Remember when the Batman games were stealth games instead of Batman flavored beat em ups?
Thank you. This articles was inspired by me getting those games for my kids to play. I’ve been introducing them to a bunch of those movies and shows and they were begging to be able to play games related to the ,movies. Especially the delorean from back to the future, so when I saw that there has been a bunch of 80’s nostalgia in games I had to pick them up.
Great article as always! Thank you for the time throw back!
I’ll check it out.
Since you mention cheating I have one Code for you that should be remembered.

Those were my first gaming experiences too. I could never beat Metroid in my youth without cheating. A game that really took me back to that experience was Axiom Verge. I recommend it if you need a 1986 Metroid fix!
You’re making me feel old. Lol.
The games I was first exposed to was Pitfall, ET, Missle Command, Pacman and Joust on Atari. I remember when NES first came out and how awesome Duck Hunt and all the Super Mario Bros. games were.
I was born in 1997, and my first gaming experience was around ages 1-2 with the Sega Genesis when I watched my father play Doom and Kid Chameleon. I quite enjoyed watching him kill demons from hell (which looked AWESOME to a 2 year old), but I seldom touched the controller myself though as I was too preoccupied with discovering the joys of running around in circles and wrapping myself in my blankets and pretending to be a super hero (good times). I only really started gaming at about 3 years old when I got a Nintendo 64, and later the first Playstation. I specifically recall my main games on the 64 being Super Smash Bros., Starfox 64, and Banjo & Kazooie, though I never beat any of them, I still got plenty of entertainment. For playstation, I mostly played Crash Bandicoot, early Spyro games, and various other games for it that I can’t remember, though I vaguely recall a game with spaceship racing zoo animals. My dad meanwhile focused on Final Fantasy and Quake (I still have many of the games).
Why is this relevant? Well, seeing your nostalgic feeling about your early gaming years makes me think about mine.
