Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III Releases Today on PC
Today marks the release of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III on PC. If you’ve been keeping up with ourTop 5 RPGsof the month series, we tabbed this game as one of thetop games of the month of April.
Developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega, Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II is the third installment of the real-time strategy series set in a dark future world set in the popular universe created by Games Workshop. You will lead one of three races: Space Marines, Eldars, and Orks. Each has unique heroes, units, buildings, and abilities. The game takes the popular elements of the series’ history and focuses on massive battles waged on vast maps with hundreds of units, in both a single player campaign and a meaty multiplayer mode. The game features RPG elements, such as customization of units and heroes that can be provided with special equipment and abilities as you increase your gained experience. Fans of this rich universe will lose themselves in this one.
The past games in the series have been addicting, tactical affairs that have consumed countless hours of player time, while immersing them in the rich, grim lore of the Warhammer universe. The third installment ups the ante with towering war machines, massive army battles, elite squads you can send in and more.
Early review scores are looking solid, so if you’re looking for something heady and gratifying to dig into this weekend, this could be the game for you.

Emergence
Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.
Sadly, I don’t have a PC anymore….
I played the beta, and at first I didn’t like it.
The massive army size actually worked against most of the mechanics. Most of your units have an activated ability for tactical options, but with such a huge army you couldn’t possibly use more than one or two before most of your units were shredded. Plus, most of your units were super fragile. Even elites would get obliterated before they could do much. Strategy basically boiled down to: build huge army, send it at the enemy, hope you didn’t get wiped out by an orbital bombardment. Something that doesn’t really fit the “super-tanky” Space Marines or the “super-tactical” Eldar.
Then I tried out the Orks.
That’s when I realized that Orks are meant for building huge armies and then mobbing the enemy in EVERY Dawn of War game. After that, it was just an endless WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! of mayhem, carnage, metal music, and fun.
I’m definitely gonna get this game in the future. Maybe when the GOTY version comes out.
