Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 Rules Out a PvPvE Mode

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2has decided not to pursue a PvPvE (Player vs. Player vs. Environment) variant, as it could pose a challenge for the successful shooter, which has found a balance between its PvP (Player vs. Player) and PvE (cooperative) modes.

The release of Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 has been a massive success. It has revitalized the Games Workshop franchise, which already had some great games, but none had sold over two million copies within a single month. Furthermore, Saber Interactive, now independent from the Embracer Group, has strengthened its position and is considering a third Space Marine installment or even a story DLC.

A significant factor in this success is the variety of modes in this third-person shooter, which leans on the cooperative format (PvE) with its campaign and Operations mode. For those seeking a competitive PvP experience, Space Marine 2 includes Battle Barge mode and the Eternal War variant.

Some players think so, but director Dmitry Grigorenko doubts it can be done without compromising the balance of the game. In an interview with MP1ST, he explained that while we might see a PvPvE mode in the Warhammer series someday, its inclusion in Space Marine 2 could cause significant problems.

Grigorenko elaborated that while Space Marine 2 has both PvP and PvE modes separately, combining them could harm the game’s balance. “PvPvE is the holy grail of game design. Many studios are trying to find it, and many of them fail. The truth is, it’s a very, very difficult task.”

Focusing on PvE, where players team up against AI, is a solid approach, as is a purely competitive mode where real players face off. However, merging the two could lead to unfair and unbalanced situations.

Grigorenko states that many studios have considered adding a PvPvE mode to their games, but for one reason or another, it always goes wrong. They don’t want to risk this happening with Space Marine 2.
