Warhammer 40K: Inquisitor – Martyr features numerous mechanics, which seem complicated at first glance. These include the different types of missions, equipment, crafting, and tarot cards, to name a few. Similar to Diablo 3 and Path of Exile, the game also has seasonal and DLC content that considerably extends the scope of the Warhammer universe. Let’s start with the best beginner class, especially if it is your first time playing anARPG.

The most beginner-friendly class in Inquisitor – Martyr is the Crusader. These religious warriors are extremely devout to the immortal God-Emperor and are thus able to fight with unending zeal. All subclasses of the Crusader are ideal candidates for any new player as they can make use of the heaviest Power Armor and most destructive of weapons. However, the downside is that compared to the others, they move slower. They can take a ton of punishment and damage though without succumbing to death so easily.

Crusaders make use of the Focus resource to fuel their abilities, and using this does not incur any penalty like the Psyker’s Warp energy. It also regenerates automatically, which means that the player’s input is no longer necessary, unlike the Assassin’s Adrenaline resource.

Choosing the Crusader’s subclass will depend on whatever playstyle you want. Assault Crusaders are the best melee candidate because they are capable of going toe to toe against any daemon. They can choose to take up a Power Sword and Shield or even use thundering two-handed greatswords. Meanwhile, their Assault Armor lets them jump across the battlefield, crashing down onto their hapless foes. This also slightly offsets their lack of mobility. If ranged combat is more of your preference, the Tactical Crusader has got your back. Masters of all types of ranged weaponry, this subclass is deadly at keeping enemies at bay.

After completing every mission, your inventory will be filled with a ton of equipment, which is not limited to weapons and armor. There are also inoculators, signums, and purity seals or secondary gear to boost the overall performance of your character. I highly suggest selling them to Captain Ragna in bulk by selecting their respective rarities.

One aspect of the game that is different from most RPGs is the buy-back option. If you sell loot and then exit the store menu, you will no longer have the chance to purchase your recently sold gear. So if you are planning to sell Artificer or Relic items, be sure to individually check them first to avoid permanently losing the ones you need.

As mentioned previously, one way of handling unimportant loot is by selling them but you also have the option to salvage them to gather valuable resources. The rule of thumb is that if their rarities are either Common, Mastercrafted, or Rare, it would be better to sell them. Doing so will allow you to accumulate Caligari Credits, which is one of the primary in-game currencies for crafting powerful weapons and armor when you reach level 40+. You will also spend it researching tech powers.

Furthermore, salvaging these lower-level items will yield very few materials. As such, you ought to save this activity for Artificers and Relics since they grant extra and better quality resources.

Fate is a premium currency in Inquisitor – Martyr and it has a multitude of uses including crafting, buying loot chests containing random but rare and powerful gear, and even DLCs. On top of playing through the main campaign, Random Missions will reward a higher amount of this currency. Before starting them, you will have the option to increase the mission’s difficulty mode to gain more Fate. However, I highly recommend choosing lower-leveled quests instead. Doing so will allow you to complete several missions faster as opposed to spending more than 30 minutes to brute force your way to the end of a single one.

Another activity to effectively increase the Fate you obtain would be by raising your System Influence across multiple sectors in the galaxy. Remember to equip the Martyrdom Card before starting any Random Mission to boost the Influence points you gain after completing it. Note that this tarot card can be obtained by finishing the Desperate Crusade Priority Assignment.

And finally, it is worth noting that selling Artificer and Relic items also grants a small amount of this currency. So if you already have an abundant supply of crafting resources, you should consider selling some of them for extra Fate.

Gaining additional XP can be done by choosing a specific mission type, equipping the right tarot card, and fully exploring the map. The mission that grants the highest experience is Intels. It might be tempting to sell them for more than 100,000 Caligari Credits but these are best used to quickly level up your Inquisitor since you can gain at least 1,500 XP per Intel. Similar to the Fate, remember to equip the Murder Tarot Card beforehand to gain an additional 30% experience.

And finally, it is essential to continue exploring the map of every mission even after finishing its corresponding objectives. Not only do you acquire valuable loot by uncovering all chests but you also get to eliminate enemies to accumulate additional XP.

Suppression in Inquisitor – Martyr functions much like Super Armor inLost Arkor stagger bars in other games. It represents how much punishment your Inquisitor can take before they start becoming affected by debuffs and crowd control abilities. The Suppression bar is the circular gauge right above your health, and has three major breakpoints. Green means you are protected, yellow indicates that you are suppressed, and red signifies that you are overwhelmed.

The Suppression System is a neat way of introducing this mechanic from the tabletop game into the ARPG format where it is not commonly used. Becoming suppressed means that you are susceptible to minor crowd control effects such as Blind or Knockback. Meanwhile, being overwhelmed means that you are susceptible to getting Stunned, Frozen, or even Knocked Down.

Keep in mind that enemies also have their own Suppression stats. Minor foes will always be in the red, meaning overwhelmed, and can always be affected by all negative effects. Stronger enemies are more resistant, while bosses will often even have their hardy Green Suppression bars to defend against your attacks. The Suppression bar will also automatically refill itself while outside of combat. During fights, however, your only options are to duck into cover by hitting LB if you are using an Xbox controller, or following a certain Inoculator combination, which I will discuss next.

The Inoculator in the game functions similarly to theEmergency MedicalInhalerinThe Outer Worldsand the Flasks in Path of Exile. Aside from being able to restore your Inquisitor’s health, it can be improved to add a variety of effects to complement your playstyle. An Inoculator is customized with up to four different components. Each of these can potentially increase its cooldown or even provide fewer overall uses to balance out the enhanced effects.

For any class, one of the best components to apply are Coagulant or Rejuvenator. These add a potent healing over time effect that can be effectively used to sustain combat and offset the damage of the smaller hits you would take. The two other useful components for damage increase are Stimm and Psychon. The former has a slight damage buff and a longer duration. This is perfect for classes that make use of sustained damage. Psychon, on the other hand, gives a huge damage increase of about 200% but it has a small duration. As such, this is perfect for those who have fewer but heavier nukes or burst abilities.

For the final Inoculator skill, you ought to get the Purifier, which significantly lowers its cooldown rate. This is very crucial in critical moments since being unable to trigger it faster can mean death for your character.

One of the best qualities of Inquisitor – Martyr is the synergy among stats that provide stacking bonuses. It might be tempting to create an all-around character with different types of loot and stats, which grant tons of multiple effects. However, it is wiser to play to your strengths instead of spreading yourself too thin. So focus on one or two passive trees at a time while also investing in attributes, perks, and gear that compliments them even if they have fewer overall effects.

Rather than focusing on dealing targeted attacks, it is best to primarily invest in AoE skills and passives to withstand the hordes of enemies coming your way. This becomes more crucial in midgame when they start to become overwhelming. For the Area Effects Passive Tree, you are better off allocating points into Exploding Rites or Surgical Carnage first if you are dealing ranged or melee damage, respectively.

You can then invest in boosting the radius and succeeding damage bonuses of your AoE skills. One particularly good ability is the Psyker’s Crush Psychic Power because it also knocks down enemies, may they be small or big.

Weapons in Inquisitor – Martyr can easily be swapped back and forth when in combat. Now the good thing about this is that you are able to effectively switch between skills as well. You can opt to wield a two-handed sword together with a sword and shield for your Crusader to deal massive damage and enhance your defenses, respectively. Or, you can consider equipping two two-handed staves for your Psyker but with different core skills to buff yourself and your allies while inflicting great damage.

There are so many possibilities, however, instead of solely focusing on executing offensive actions, you are better off using utility-type skills as well to remain resilient on the battlefield. Doing so will allow you to survive longer and more challenging encounters.
