Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Gets New Exclusive Gameplay Footage, Includes New Weapons
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty gets 10 whole minutes of newgameplayfootage. We get to see sneak peeks of newweaponsand foes.
IGN just recently revealed that they have 10 minutes of new and exclusive footage forWo Long: Fallen Dynasty. While there was a quick 2-minute action trailer back in December, that was still a trailer in the fullest sense meaning it had a lot of unconnected scenes. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t great, however, as it still showed off new stuff like the greataxe weapon.
This time, we get minutes of uninterrupted gameplay (except when the player character meets their untimely demise). We still got to learn something new watching the footage, so let’s unpack what we saw.
After a crushing defeat at the hands (or better yet, paws?) of a humongous spiked and glowing hedgehog, the player returns to battle. Now, they are equipped with a shiny new staff weapon, something that has not been revealed thus far. A staff weapon is less on being a separate entity but is considered to be an extension of one’s self incombat.
The Staff in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty does get its chance to momentarily shine when the player encounters a new foe. Enter the giant monkey, whose forearms’ size rivals even the likes of Popeye the Sailor, a boss hell-bent on taking us out. While the attempt does ultimately lead to another Crushing Defeat, we get to see a few moves.
We see that the Staff allows us to attack with a flurry of blunt hits. Players who choose to take up this weapon can become a maelstrom of blows, each resonating with satisfying, chunky wooden impact sounds. The weapon can even be efficiently used to parry incoming hits, much like other options.
Though anticlimactic, the player does not make use of his new armament when dispatching his foe. He does, however, show off a pretty acrobatic and flashy sword execution move.
The player will also now have access to a massive, metallic spiked club. This new item is the very definition of overkill, as its hefty frame looks both unwieldy and comically imposing. In a good way, of course. It appears that the club will be the first weapon of being able to impose painful blunt force trauma onto their foes.
It is thus extremely unfortunate that the club wasn’t given a chance in the spotlight. Instead of showing off its titanic moves, the club was only briefly featured in a platforming segment. Bummer for those who prefer slower weapons that pack a serious, whopping punch in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
A new area looks to have also been revealed in the 10-minute exclusive footage. Deep within the forest is an old cave system, teeming with red corruption all around. Inside the cave lives a new monster, an evil alligator that has been twisted and deformed by its surroundings. This new foe is capable of hiding underground, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.
And strike well, it does. The alligator bursts from the dirt, knocking the player back in the process. It is also able to manipulate the earth itself as it flings rock and debris telepathically toward its prey. It can even stomp onto the ground, causing impaling spikes to erupt outwards, hoping to catch anything on their jagged ends. Given enough time to charge up, this alligator boss can concentrate its efforts on bringing together even more boulders. Once this new attack reaches critical mass, it can fling this huge hodgepodge projectile at the player, causing terrible, terrible damage.
Like any good alligator, this one also makes excellent use of its tail in a pinch, spinning around and knocking anything and everything to their backs.
Try as they might, the player character is quite unprepared for the onslaught of beast and rock. They ultimately succumb to their wounds, despite bringing in a healing spirit to top off their health to full—yet another crushing defeat.
Many valiant attempts are made to end the life of the corrupted animal but to no avail. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s combat is indeed punishing for those unprepared. The player does eventually learn that we can cut the projectile rocks flying towards us in half, a useful skill by any means, but it is not enough.
Eventually, victory is at hand. The player character is then able to fully parry all of the incoming blows while still being on the offensive. Our friendly alligator’s ultimate attack is even thrown back against them, dealing near-fatal damage to the beast. This attempt ends in triumph as we exact our revenge in a beautiful execution move.
For their efforts, the player receives a Ring Pommel Sabre and a Yellow Turban Armor. Not really flashy, but it’s the journey that counts, right?
